Hello everyone,
I am very new to fedora Linux, or just Linux. I am having a lot of difficulties trying to install and actually making the drivers work, I tried following numerous tutorials like for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCLx5rQPBIU but somehow each time when I try to run a game like Minecraft, the performance stays the same, Is it possible I am missing something? Or maybe because of the profile thing ? Can somewhone help me please?
Ps: Btw I have a GeForce GTX 1060 6GB and have a thing called wayland.
Your card is not supported by the curent nvidia drivers, You will therefore have to restrict yourself to the version 580 drivers. You can install them with sudo dnf install 580xx
I am assuming that you are using Fedora 44. You can confirm for us what hardware is available by running one command (inxi -ezxx) then copy and paste the result here as preformatted text using the </> button on the toolbar. You may need to install inxi to use that command.
If you are using fedora 44 you may need to follow the instructions here to install the proper driver for the nvidia GTX 1060 GPU. When fedora upgraded from f43 to f44 the nvidia driver was also upgraded from the 580 version to the 595 version (and now the 610 version). The 580 driver is the last to support the GTX 1060 GPU.
I note that the video you linked was created about a year ago when fedora was at version 42 and it is no longer up to date for fedora 44.
By “back where I started” do you mean you are still getting the same performance in games as you did initially with a fresh install?
You can check to see if the Nividia 580xx driver from the rpmfusion repo is actually being used by running inxi -Gzxx in a terminal. It is possible the driver failed to build or you are missing command-line options. To check that the build worked, look for a log in /var/log/akmods. The current kernel command line cab be viewed with cat /proc/cmdline.
You are still using the open source in-kernel nouveau driver which explains poor performance on games. I gather you tried to install the appropriate rpmfusion driver, so you need to determine why it isn’t being used.
That latest image shows the nouveau driver.
If you followed the steps in the link I provided the nvidia 580xx drivers should have been installed.
To verify which packages are currently installed please run dnf list --installed \*nvidia\* and post the results here.
Do not post those results as an image but instead copy and paste the text from your screen into the post and then mark it as preformatted text so it is readable, searchable, and can be quoted in replies.
To post as preformatted text simply copy & paste then highlight the pasted text and click the </> button on the toolbar.
That result clearly shows you do not have the nvidia drivers installed.
Please follow the steps in the link provided in post 4 above to install the 580xx drivers, then reboot after a suitable wait to ensure the new driver is properly installed.
The thing is yesterday I followed the instructions and then when I restarted my computer the screens where black, I left I for at least 10 minutes, and to fix it, I got some help and from what I understood we deleted the nvidia drivers. Should I try again? @moskimus Safe boot is off.
If secure boot is disabled, then installing the legacy 580xx driver as Jeff suggested should have worked. It might take a few minutes for the kernel mod to be built so it’s possible you rebooted too quickly or hit some other issue. I would try installing the 580xx driver again. If it fails to boot or if you get a black screen instead of your greeter, it would be helpful to provide some logs or error messages so that people can help you further.
