Nvidia drivers upgrade conflict

Hello! I have Fedora44 Workstation with Gnome desktop enviroment. PC specs include RTX 3060 GPU. This is relevant as it seems that I have issues with nvidia drivers.
Invoking # dnf upgrade I get the following message:

Problem: installed package xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-cuda-3:610.57.04-1.fc44.x86_64 requires nvidia-modprobe(x86-64) = 3:610.57.04, but none of the providers can be installed
  - cannot install both nvidia-modprobe-3:615.71.09-1.fc44.x86_64 from cuda-fedora44-x86_64 and nvidia-modprobe-3:610.57.04-1.fc44.x86_64 from @System
  - cannot install both nvidia-modprobe-3:615.71.09-1.fc44.x86_64 from cuda-fedora44-x86_64 and nvidia-modprobe-3:610.57.04-1.fc44.x86_64 from cuda-fedora44-x86_64
  - cannot install the best update candidate for package nvidia-modprobe-3:610.57.04-1.fc44.x86_64
  - problem with installed package

Nvidia drivers were installed according to nvidia’s own guide on installing drivers for fedora 44.

As I understand it, there seems to be conflict with repositories @System and cuda-fedora44. I have had a quick search on Nvidia and Fedora forums, but did not manage to find simillar issue. I had a not-so-bright thought to remove nvidia-modprobe.x86_64 package, but dnf helpfully listed a long list of dependencies that had to be also removed. Another search revelead that modprobe is some kind of library/program that hooks nvidia drivers. I might be wrong about it. Furthermore @System repo seems to be the one that is installed from local file, which I do not remember doing. As it goes, I am simply afraid to remove modprobe package as I fear it will break my video output and leave me unable to repair it. Disabling cuda-fedora44 repository leaves no changes.

Thank you in advance and apologise if the issue is very obvious, I am relatively new to the GNU/Linux.

This is a distinct issue almost always seen when having both rpmfusion repos and the cuda-fedora repos enabled with packages installed from both..

My suggestion for a clean solution

  1. Disable the cuda-fedora-44 repo.
    sudo dnf config-manager setopt "cuda-fedora-44.enable=0"
  2. remove all currently installed nvidia packages.
sudo dnf remove \*nvidia\* --exclude nvidia-gpu-firmware
  3. install the nvidia driver exclusively from rpmfusion
    sudo dnf install akmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-cuda

Wait a couple minutes after step 3 completes then reboot.

This is the source of your issue. The nvidia drivers from the cuda-fedora repos never seem to be specifically tested and tweaked for use on fedora and we often see this type of issue. There also seems to be an issue with proper sync of the packages within the cuda-fedora repo as well a timing on version releases from the different repos.

When the drivers are installed from the rpmfusion-nonfree-nvidia-driver repo (which you already have enabled) or the rpmfusion-nonfree & rpmfusion-nonfree-updates repos, those packages have been specifically tweaked and tested for use with nvidia. Instructions here and here.

Thanks you very much! That seems to have done the trick. Appreciate the time you gave me to help.

This documentation bypass the official documentation on the matter.

You shall not disable the cuda-fedora44 repository to fix the compatibility but exclude the nvidia provided driver components (that often lacks newer kernel support) in order to use the rpmfusion provided driver.

I disagree.
Since very few, if any, average users need the additional packages that may come from the cuda-fedora-44 repo to support personal use of their computers it is not beneficial to have that repo enabled. Having it installed but disabled means the users who do need those few packages can always select to enable it, when needed, to install/update packages from there with the enablerepo option to dnf on a case by case basis.

Leaving it disabled by default prevents the potential for inadvertent package conflicts with events such as version updates that may not be in sync between the different repos that contain identical package names.
The cuda-fedora and rpmfusion-nonfree repos do contain some packages with identical names and others with conflicting files.

This is un-important that you agree or disagree, you are hijacking the official documentation. I’m not going to discuss this matter with you. Should anything be worth discussing this has to be escalated to the documentation bug tracker at bugzilla.rpmfusion.org

However the reasoning you’ve provided is totally un-backed and dangerous. We do not expect to resolve conflicts by disabling repository of any kind. This will prevent both bugfixes and security issues to be propagated to end-users.
