Nvidia drivers not working on Kernel >= 6.7.4

Hello fellow humans!

I’ve have recently noticed some weird performance issues since I installed kernel version 6.7.4. Digging deeper I’ve discovered that my the proprietary nvidia drivers (installed from rpmfusion) are failling to load during boot, and falling back to nouveau.

I’ve already tried:

  1. Forcing akmod/dracut rebuilds.
  2. Reinstalling the drivers.
  3. Downgrading the drivers.

But the only thing that worked so far was falling back to an older kernel version (6.6.14 right now, but I’ve might have missed the 6.6.3).

Any ideas of where should I look next in order to solve this issue?

All of that info shows the drivers must have loaded properly. To confirm please post the output of lsmod | grep nvidia. If that shows several lines containing the names of the nvidia drivers then they have loaded and are functional.

We need to know also the kind of desktop and nvidia device : pc, laptop? I see pci id
01:00.0, looks laptop. I see in the log that nvidia-powerd is started too.
What say /var/log/Xorg.0.log ? (If the desktop goes so far)

Absolutely! And once again thanks for the help, Jeff!

As I said before, after the kernel update to 6.7.4, I started noticing performance issues, while doing 3d work in blender along with playing games. Some other issues also appeared, such as the computer not coming back from sleep state, random freezes from which the computer was unable to recover. And a strange change in the luks decryption screen at startup (I’m not close to my computer so I can only share those screens later), which wasn’t anything really bothering.

After the freezes I went digging in the logs to see if I could see anything that looked suspicious, and found nothing (but I’m relatively new to linux, so I think I may have missed a lot in there). I then assumed that, since nothing standed out, maybe just the output was not being refreshed, but nothing was going “wrong”. Downgrading the drivers did nothing, but reverting to the older kernel reduced the freezes and performance issues, as well as reverting back the luks decryption screen (which I’ll share as soon as I get back to my computer, if this might be useful in any way).

Removing the drivers also reverted the luks decryption screen, but not the performance issues (although I had no freezes during my tests), so I assumed the situation stated in the first post.

And this line in journalctl threw me off, but reading it again I clearly misread that:

The system has fallback to nouveau, this is why all your graphic issues.
You can try to disable nvidia-fallback.service knowing the X server wont start and look maybe with better view.
Note by the way that cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log usualy must return something.
So let’s try this.

To prevent difficulties to restart you laptop after this, disable first the session manager start.
systemctl disable display-manager.service
then disable nvidia-fallback.service :
systemctl disable nvidia-fallback.service
Restart the laptop.

You will be probably leave in console.
As root there, perform a lsmod in nvidia modules :
lsmod | grep "nvidia"
You need to have the nvidia displayed with other modules like this :

If it doesn’t, try to reload driver with modprobe :
remove first:
modprobe -r -a nvidia_uvm nvidia_drm nvidia_modeset nvidia
then load :
modprobe -a nvidia_uvm nvidia_drm nvidia_modeset nvidia
secure the process:
restorecon "/boot/symvers-$(uname -r).*"
systemctl restart systemd-modules-load.service
Redo lsmod and perform a ls in /dev to see if device is present:
ls -1 /dev/nvidia*
It need to return something like this:

/dev/nvidia0
/dev/nvidiactl
/dev/nvidia-modeset
/dev/nvidia-uvm
/dev/nvidia-uvm-tools

/dev/nvidia-caps:
nvidia-cap1
nvidia-cap2

If not, try nvidia-modprobe to create devices:
nvidia-modprobe -c 0 -m -u
And redo the previous process.
If all fine, then try to start the display-manager service :
systemctl start display-manager.service

Imo, I think this is a rpmfusion packages issues, not a kernel properly.
(No matter what is the result of the test, think to re enable disabled services before restart the computer:
systemctl enable display-manager.service
systemctl enable nvidia-fallback.service, this one only if you want fall-back to nouveau).

I don’t know if it affects your usage, but you can try using Negativo17’s repo instead of RPMFusion to install NVIDIA drivers and instead of having to edit /etc/defaul/grub (or use grubby for that) you can set your configuration with files inside /etc/modprobe.d and /etc/dracut.conf.d and or even try one of the CachyOS kernels.

Maybe force it, not necessarily needed.

I run dracut after a kernel or an NVIDIA driver update so I have both my screens really working during boot. That makes both my monitors (I use a laptop) show the boot process and mainly I dont have to type my passphrase for my encrypted drive only on my laptop’s screen. Mind you --regenerate-all will run for wall installed kernels, if you want just for the current one, remove it.

sudo dracut --verbose --force --printsize --parallel --regenerate-all

I don’t typically talk about it here on the forum, but it’s a solid choice. Only thing is, make sure to remove the RPMFusion repo so you don’t have conflicts down the road. You can simply do it with the slider in Gnome Software.

Note that blender may be the issue and not the nvidia drivers. It seems that others have had problems with blender on fedora (both wayland and xorg DEs). Search the forum for blender and related problems.

I think to something suddently. It is a real possibility that the initramfs was not correctly build for the rpmfusion package in kernel, this issue already happened in the past.
Maybe a simple dracut command is needed before diving into more options.
dracut $(uname -r)
This a good and simple way to drive this possibility away and going into your suggestion.

We can also point kernel symvers which could be not updated at install time.

–force would be needed to force replacing the current one.

sudo dracut --force

Maybe also run akmods

sudo akmods --force --rebuild --kernels $(uname -a)

If NVIDIA driver setup has finished, Flatpak Blender work fine with cuda.
