After issuing sudo dnf system-upgrade download --releasever=44 --allowerase and downloading the updates, the transaction fails with the errors below. What should be done?

It looks like that you can install nodejs in three different ways. You have to clean this up first. Just then you can upgrade to the next Fedora version. Otherwise you have this conflicts you posted above.

Pretty much everything on my systems is installed with DNF.

Not sure but the issue might be related to F43 having the package named nodejs while F44 has versioned package names like nodejs20.

And nodejs is a dependency of rstudio-common, so attempting to uninstalling nodejs would create more complications.

Yes, good find, the nodejs packaging change may be at the source of this issue.

I tried sudo dnf swap --allowerasing nodejs-npm nodejs22-npm and sudo dnf swap --allowerasing nodejs nodejs22 but the result is the same.

From the messages, it seems F44 has a conflict between nodejs20 and nodejs22 versions, at least for this upgrade, while my F43 seems to have both nodejs20 and nodejs22 installed for some reason.

After checking with repoquery -q --installed --whatrequires nodejs20 and seeing nothing other than other nodejs20 dependencies, I removed it. In contrast, repoquery -q --installed --whatrequires nodejs22 indicates rstudio-common depends on it.

Now the DNF upgrade transaction check no longer fails. Hopefully the dnf5 offline reboot succeeds without further hiccups.

EDIT: F43 to F44 upgrade succeeded with no further issues. I did have to remove R-markdown and R-rmarkdown packages which are apparently not available in F44 as were causing problems with R-core upgrades. After that everything seems to be in order.

Well, I spoke a bit too soon. the F43 nodejs, nodejs-npm, and nodejs-libs packages are still installed and swapping them to nodejs22 would force the removal of rstudio-common and rstudio-desktop.

Also, part of the issue is that swapping one package, such as nodejs to nodejs22 causes conflicts with the -libs package, and I don’t see a way to swap all the relevant packages in one transaction. Is there a way?

I’m afraid of bypassing dependency checks etc.

And the issue is due to the packaging changes between F43 and F44.

Note that nodejs20 is not installed. nodejs from F43 is installed and has file conflicts with the versioned packages like nodejs22 or nodejs20.

If it’s too complicated, maybe I will just end up having to uninstall and reinstall RStudio, which will allow removing/swapping the nodejs packages, and hope that the user data and settings are not affected.

Problem solved by tackling the swap with nodejs-libs which is the dependency and which pulled in the other nodejs packages:
