On upgrading to F42 beta, I no longer have the option in gdm to select the normal Cinnamon desktop (Xorg). I have the “experimental Wayland” Cinnamon desktop.
Is this a new limitation of F42 or just because its in beta?

GDM no longer supports any Xorg sessions.
isn’t Cinnamon supposed to use it’s own display manager (MDM)?
sorry if my question is silly.
edit: nvm, perhaps not. I just noticed that the Linux Mint team has archived the MDM repository, but they do have a repository for LightDM settings which is updated, so perhaps they’re using that now, I don’t know.
The Cinnamon spin used lightdm
with slick-greeter-cinnamon
as the associated greeter. By installing slick-greeter-cinnamon
you should get lightdm
installed as a dependency. For lightdm
there are several other greeters available.
To switch to using lightdm
run systemctl enable --force lightdm.service
.
Yes, changing the DM worked; although it seems that I had to disable gdm before enabling lightdm.
Its a pity the gnome folks chose to remove this capability.
Actually, it seems that Fedora deliberately disabled this capability in the spec file of the RPM. (probably to make it hard for users to use Xorg).
