No sound after 42 → 44 upgrade

After upgrading from 42 to 44 I have no sound. If I run “systemctl --user status pipewire” I get:


Failed to connect to user scope bus via local transport: No such file or directory

dbus is running. If I run journalctl -b there are entries like

/usr/libexec/xdg-desktop-portal[13860]: Failed connect to PipeWire: Couldn't connect to PipeWire

FWIW, this bug report suggests that you might be able to run the command manually in a terminal with an extra -v flag to get more verbose information about what is going wrong.

We need more details to understand the problem. If you don’t find a solution with searches of existing bug reports you need to provide enough detail to allow others with access to similar hardware to reproduce your issue. New Linux kernels often have issues with sound and networking, so having USB devices that use in-kernel drivers can be important while looking for a solution. To engage support fromthe wider linux community, it is helpful to post hardware details from running inxi -Fzxx in a terminal so you can post the output as web-searchable text (use the </> button for pre-formatted text). If you can fully update Fedora packages and vendor firmware you avoid wasting time on solved issues and if the problem persists it is easier for others to test the same configuration.

Can you also check if you get the same error running

If you create a new user does that user exhibit the same issues?

This looks like there’s something odd with the user environment.

Additionally, 500 is in the system account range. Those accounts are sometimes treated specially. For example, some of the desktop managers hide those accounts from being listed on the login screen.

Was it always that way? This machine started years ago as a RedHat machine, before Fedora existed. I’ve been upgrading it ever since.

No tweaks. I just upgraded from f42 to f44

Older systems used UID_MIN 500 (RHEL6 and older )
Fedora changed the default of UID_MIN to 1000 in fedora 16.

systemd-pam is already installed.

This is a big step forward as it points to an old configuration setting, probably in $HOME/.config, but possibly in a shell startup script. New data point: In f42 DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS is set before I start X. In f44 for the new user it is set before I start X, but for the old user it is not.

That’s all about audio configuration. It seems clear I have a weird dbus issue. I’ve been searching but I haven’t yet figured out what sets DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS.
