No Audio on Dell Optiplex 7010, but it works on a Optiplex 3090 out of the box

I’m trying to switch from Windows 11 to Fedora Workstation on my HTPC (I only use a browser on this machine so expected 0 issues). But I can’t get my audio to work.

Hardware:

  • Dell Optiplex 7010
  • Club3D Displayport™ 1.4 Cable to HDMI™ 2.0b Active Adapter (CAC-1082)
    • I want 4k60 on my TV and the Dell only has HDMI 1.4 which only does 4k30.

Last week I installed Fedora Workstation 43 (upgraded everything) on it, but I couldn’t get audio working. So sadly I had to reinstall Windows 11. The Live Image also has non-working audio.

Today I received a Optiplex 3090 which I intend to use as a server, but I decided to revisit this issue again. I connected everything to the 3090 and booted the Live Image and lo and behold the audio works out of the box :person_shrugging:. Tried the 7010 again and nothing.

Looked at https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/how-to-troubleshoot-sound-problems/ and used https://knowledgebase.frame.work/fedora-audio-troubleshooting-guide-BJAe1Kr0o

The output of alsa-info.sh --no-upload and the Diagnostic Report from the framework tool can be found here: https://codeberg.org/bschapendonk/dell_optiplex_audio_issues (both using the live image, so no full installation)

I’m not sure how to continue, I was hoping that the 3090 would also fail so I would have a machine to toy around with stress-free when convenient.
And I don’t want to mess around with the 7010 unless i’m 100% sure it will work.

Am I missing something obvious, or is the 7010 just too “new” for working audio in my scenario.

Find what audio hardware is on that PC, and then see if it is supported by a driver in Fedora.

Is it https://linux-hardware.org/?id=pci:8086-7ad0-1028-0bce? Looks like a unicorn model with only one LHDB probe, and both Intel and Dell have been restructuring, so efforts to support the hardware in linux may be suffering.

Thank you, I was not ware of that site. I probed the 7010 and the results are here https://linux-hardware.org/?probe=64e2d8dfcb in case they can be of any help.

With an “Alder Lake-S HD Audio Controller” I would have thought it would be compatible.
