I opened Timeshift up Yesterday to see what orr if its been backing anything up. It hasnt, sda2 Doesn’t have enough space i what it says in certain terms. So I ran dnf list installed
here are the results. Theres a lot! I have both the Free and Non Free repositories enabled. I only use my laptop to study with through the browser and some other common things. How can I free up enough space for Timeshift to write to the only available option, sda2?
Also, Ive been thinking of backing up everything to a seperate external SSD. I know I’ll have to reformat it. I only need 1TB. What brand or model works best with Linux/Fedora? Yes I know I’ll have to format the SSD before using it with Linux. Tanks!

How small is the drive and partition you are using?
Deciding which installed packages are unnecessary is a tedious process, and ultimately doesn’t represent much space. Before even trying that, you ought to make sure there isn’t an easier solution to your lack of space.
I’m not sure which tools you have installed for displaying the partitioning of your drive(s) and the use of space within mounted partition(s).
For some of that information, I use
lsblk -o NAME,FSTYPE,SIZE,LABEL,FSSIZE,FSUSE%,MOUNTPOINTS
But lsblk
is in the util-linux
package which I think you don’t have, and while I think it is a very good package to have, I hesitate to tell you to install more when you are asking what to uninstall.
I assume you have du
so you can use commands like the following to get a rough idea of storage use:
sudo du -d 1 -x /
sudo du -d 1 -x /home
sudo du -d 1 -x /usr
You likely can get more informed help here by posting info including the output from those.
Welcome to the forum!
It would be helpful to know the existing installed disk drive storage and how it is apportioned. At a command line, run the command df and post the results. I’m not familiar with Timeshift, but it would also be helpful to know how it has been commanded or configured to backup your system. Please post those details, if you can.
For your consideration: I don’t back up my whole OS, and I don’t know that there’s much value in doing so. Perhaps there is for you. I just back up my own home directory (~) and all subdirectories.
I suggest holding your SDD questions until we figure out what’s needed to satisfy your requirements.
Greg.

Exactly as Greg says, run df
and share the results. On my main server, /dev/sda2 is the partition for /boot and is quite small, inappropriate for a backup. An external drive (most any will do) is better, and doesn’t need to be fast, just needs the capacity to save your valuables.
Also as Greg says, don’t back up the entire system, only your valuables, which are likely in your home directory. It is “trivial” (well, at least straightforward) to rebuild your OS environment from scratch (unless you have extensive customizations), so restoring your system from a crashed disk would just be a reinstall. If the disk crashed, a backup kept on that disk is pretty inaccessible anyway.
My main server is also a database server and backup server for other servers, desktops and laptops, so I separately plan backups for those to a external drive, but my home environment is atypical to that of the more common user.

thanks you guys I really appreciate it! here are the results for df, Timeshift is jut an auto backup application. I can chose between rsycnc or btrfs oe whatever its called, but I think I have problems before even that notice on the main page, the one where it says create top left, which I selected and got that pop up, the bottom notification. These terms are a bit above my knowledge that there using or more specifically what to do about them.

Until you posted more information, I never guessed that you were trying to back up to your /boot
partition. That is obviously not something you should be doing.
If you want backup for possible hardware failure, you will need either some cloud storage to back up to, or you need a USB external drive. A 1 TB USB external seems to be overkill. You currently could back up to under an eighth of that. Allowing for serious growth, minus whatever compression the backup software does, minus the things you likely shouldn’t be backing up (vs. reinstall if necessary), I think a 480GB external would be well more than enough and I saw some great bargains in fast 480 GB USB SSD drives when I was browsing online recently (well under half the cost of 1TB).
A USB SSD is not the kind of device that has OS specific issues. Any brand/model will work as well in Fedora as it does in Windows.
Anyway, removing software to make backup easier is not helpful.
For backups to protect against operator blunders (rather than major hardware or malware issues) the snapshot ability of btrfs is the best answer. Learning how is on my own todo list. I’m doing complicated things beyond my full understanding, and frequently hit the “oops, I wish I had a copy of what was in /etc yesterday”.

/dev/sda2 is the partition for /boot and not an option for backups.
Either buy an external drive and back up to that, or put the snapshots in @home . The snapshots there would allow you to recover from an “oops, didn’t mean to delete that”, as your disk is still operating, but not a failure of your disk.

okay I didnt think i had the option to put them anywhere else besides sda2 or sda3, which confued me. Eventually I would like an entire external backup of everything on my laptop that Timeshift could or another application could backup regularly too. I’ll try btrfs to Home under timeshift folder and see if that works! Thanks for reply ill look into some 480 gb SSD USB devices now as well.
I’m big on privacy and security so eventually having everything run off of an encrypted external SSD would be ideal not to mention the increase in performance no? I wonder if I should just h=shell out for the 1TB while its cyber monday or if a 480GB would be enough long term.

I have no guess how much is enough if you want to switch to running off a USB drive. Do you have a guess how what you might do later compares to the eighth of a TB you’re using now.
My estimate that 480GB was plenty was based on your internal drive and the assumption that the external was for backing up the internal.
Why do you expect a performance increase from a USB drive? How slow is your internal drive to make you expect that?

Unless you have production servers, the time to do backup is usually a low impact and thus low priority. And if you’re using BTRFS snapshots, the backup time and consumed space should be minimal. A 1TB SSD is overkill for what appears to be your needs, but it’s your money. My servers do backups to HDD, takes seconds to do incremental backups of /home directories.
