Need a video player-manager - NOT server/streaming

Hello all

I know the whole world is gone bonkers and everything has to be streamed.

I have my Jellyfin setup for that.

But i need a video/media manager for local files which are not movie or shows to be streamed to my TV. I have a lot of courses and learning/teaching videos i would like to have presented in a simple app, where they can have some simple tags like woodworking, speaker building a.s.o.

But it has to be an app. Not something that needs to be run in a browser and absolutely not some servers setup thing. Then i’ll just stick to my folders and browse through them there.

It would though be nice to have an overview and simple organisation tools :slight_smile:

Searching i find mostly dead projects and server stuff or just a simple player, which can play a file. Is this not something found on Linux, there’s a lot on Windows for some reason?

EDIT: It has to be something i just release on a folder and it shows the videos in the app.

I haven’t used it, but a quick search turned up Tellico. It can be installed on Fedora Linux from the default repos with dnf install tellico.

If you happen to be using the chrome browser there is an option in the menu to cast the browser window to another device. I have not used it for some time so cannot say how well it works now. I used it for some time in the past.

There are other ways to send videos to a TV and what I use right now is to have the TV connected as my monitor and i can play any videos I choose to the TV, either full screen or windowed. This can be done with any of the many media players available on linux. (MPV, VLC, and many others)

Another method I use is to install plexmediaserver on my linux system and then define a library directory where I can place any video I choose. By connecting the TV to the media server I am then able to play those videos on the TV. The media server is on my lan with wifi as is the TV so it is seamless to do that.

It does only recognise a few of my video files, 95% are not, So it looks like it can only show something that is a know in the public domain, as a video, TV show and a book is.

So that of mine specific purpose, i cannot use it, but i might see a different one, as i can handle different kinds of text files as well :slight_smile:

I am not sure what you were doing when you read my post, or how many things you were doing at once - as you completely recommended me things/ways i specifically said NOT to - even in the title. And also just a couple of lines down:

So maybe time for a nap :wink:

Digikam can play video from your local folders, and can handle tagging.

It’s primarily intended for photos though, so I’m not sure how well it works for your use case -e.g. maybe it doesn’t like big video files.

This could work, even though there’s a lot things and settings, which is not needed for a video library, i need to search through to find the ones for my needs :slight_smile:

Options only, not intended to be a fix all but things to consider.
The plex media server, once configured does not need anything done at the PC except to put the desired file in the proper location.

Your comment here seems to imply the TV may be checking DRM rights and selecting whether it should or should not display the content.

When I am using plex I also have to enable the DRM server that plex links to or it will not allow showing the videos.

Actually, this sentence can be read a couple of different ways:

  1. I need a video/media manager for local files which are not movies or shows. Those files are to be streamed to my TV.

  2. I need a video/media manager for local files. Those files are not movies or shows to be streamed to my TV.

I read it as (2) (i.e. you want to just play the files on the same device where they are stored) but maybe @computersavvy read it as (1)?

I don’t mean to offend anyone, but - which - should be very understandable in the English language, and especially combined with - are not -

So if English is not your native language, i can understand why things derail :slight_smile:

And also, i state very clearly as the 2nd sentence, that i have my Jellyfin setup - for specifically what i’m NOT searching for.

And yes, the title says it loud and clear, as Gregory also points out - i do NOT want anything that is a streaming server. I have it, and i don’t want the hassle of it for these local files on my PC here. I need a player - with simple management capabilities :slight_smile:

Yes. Plus degree in linguistics so I’m used to (perhaps over-)analysing cases like this.

player-wise, I use mpv - it’s fast and light. Don’t think it has much in the way of “manager” though - bugger all in fact.

Best I can think of that I’ve used, which might suffice to your requirements is vlc.

What functionality do you require from the “manager” side of things? Got a hit-list?

haruna perhaps - in the repos and is a wrapper to mpv and adds the management bits that I think you would want to use.

But again, my sentence still says: “are not movie or shows to be streamed to my TV”.

I also thought “NOT” in the title was pretty clear :wink:

Ohh, and if you would like some fun, then come to Denmark - we have to rules for the use of comma - one that is very old and grammatically strict, and then one that is more as you speak it. And yes, those two camps fight day in and day, which is the right one to use :sweat_smile:

That context did help in the interpretation :grinning_face:

So without the commas (and ignoring the title), it’s a case of “attachment ambiguity”.

The phrase “to be streamed to my TV” is intended to be attached to “movies or shows” - which is inside the scope of “not”.

But it could also be attached to “local files”, which is outside the scope of the “not” - so the meaning would be “But i need a video/media manager for local files (which are not movie or shows) to be streamed to my TV.”

I have looked at Haruna and it lacks that manager like thing.

What i look for, is like the old image libraries - well, they do still exist today, but i know them from back in the days.

It’s just simple categorising and tagging i need, and then the form/layout as the image library, where i can see thumbnails of the videos.

I specifically don’t want all the bells and whistles, that comes with the streaming server apps. It’s like using Gimp to resize an image or lighten it up a bit. There’s just too much of what i don’t need and it clutters up the interface :slight_smile:

Hmm, that’s a very strange app - but i guess it’s because it’s made for TV?

I have a hard time getting it to recognise my videos. It’s like it only will show what it can verify online as a known video or movie.

I don’t know what this app has been before, but now it seems mostly focused on streaming known movies and TV shows or just watching them on my PC.
