My steelseries model sensei mouse randomly and unpredictably just highlights fields on a page.
I never know when it will happen. The only way to “de-highlight” the area, is to place the mouse back into it’s recharging cradle for a few seconds and then use it to click off the highlighted area.
I have two mice exactly the same model and it happens with both of them. That’s why I can not tell if it is a software or hardware problem. It is very annoying as I have to constantly deal with this when it happens, which is several times per session. Right clicking or left clicking doesn’t help because it is like the mouse is BLOCKED. Only after placing it in the cradle for a few seconds does it “UNFREEZE” and function normally again. That this is happening with two different mice just makes it more confusing.
I am running Fed 40 with all the newest updates.
I am open to ideas / tips / suggestions.
Hi Jeff, the charging station is connected to the PC and the mouse is wireless to the charging station / PC. If the charging station is not connected to the PC, the mouse won’t work on its own.
What the actual communication is between the charging station and mouse is, I can’t say. It must be unique to steelseries. It’s a so called “laser” mouse. The mouse can be wired direct to the PC directly.
I haven’t tried it with just the direct wire. Maybe I can see if that has an effect. Of course it is more convenient without the wire.
What also happens very often is the cursor jumps around and in the middle of typing just splits sentences and puts the new text some place else in the text that has already been typed.
What do you think ?
On my logitech wireless trackball the only time I may see similar behavior is when the battery is getting low so the signal is weak. A full recharge solves that issue. My practice is to use the trackball until it indicates a low battery then do a full recharge in order to maintain battery life as much as possible.
Your description seems to indicate that the charging station is also a connection dongle similar to the logitech unifying receiver.
Do you store the mouse on the charging station so it stays fully charged? If not then try an overnight charge. Keeping it fully charged and not doing a full cycle between charges tends to reduce battery life in most devices.
Is your PC by any chance a laptop? The above behavior can also happen with a less than optimal Disable Touchpad While Typing feature. Might or might not be related with the issue described in the OP.
Hi Jeff, The PC is a laptop. The mouse indicates when the battery is getting low with a different light colour. Dark green is charged, light green is battery is weaker and red is battery is low.
I always look that it is in the Green zone. When it is a longer period without needing the mouse I put it in the charging cradle, so I think that is not the problem. I suppose you could say the charging station is also the dongle.
I don’t know what Steelseries has for communication protcol between the charging station and the mouse, maybe proprietary to steelseries.
Just typing this short text, the mouse / cursor is jumping to different places while I’m typing. I’ve turned of the Touchpad while typing and also completely disabled the touchpad just a few minutes ago.
Hi Mike, maybe you’ve seen or read the mail I sent to Jeff, if not, here is the text;

It still does it.
How did you completely disable the touchpad? I am not aware of such a setting under GNOME. What Fedora edition/spin and desktop environment are you using?
Hi Mike, I have Fed 40 GNOME Version 46. Under “Settings” there is an option under “Mouse and Touch Pad”. I have included 2 "print screens if you want to see it.
See Attachments.
I read that image differently.
The settings seem in the off position for both those options related to the touchpad. On my laptop ‘on’ turns the switch blue for both.
I have the touchpad enabled, but also set to disable the touchpad when typing and it seems to not interfere.
My impression seems that the touchpad may actually still be active and causing the random problem.
I can turn either one on or off separately. Right now they are both off. The problem still exists. I am using the mouse with the cable and the “Highlighting” still occurs.
