My Pc Crashes while using Hyperland Fedora

Since this fall i have been using Fedora on my pc. And first it was going great but then in the end of the summer i started to get a crash, and it looked like this: I was playing an online game using Wi Fi then the Monitor would turn off and show “No signal” the keyboard and mouse stop responding, the only thing that was left was sound. Then i just turn the pc off with a button. After turning it back on the WI FI adapter disappears on fedora and windows i have as dualboot. It sometimes appeard back on after i turned off the power supply but after another crash it dissappeard again, so i started using ethernet but it onlly got worse, with WI FI it would only crash once in every 2 days, with ethernet it started crashing 10 minutes after turning on an online game. So i decided to give it into repair. They did literally nothing on it for a few days because they said they don’t know linux. But when i got it back it started working normally for some reason. It was going great until a few days ago it started crashing with the same symptoms but the sound would also cut off even while playing offline games like megabonk or minecraft. I’d try another desktop other than Hyprland, while it looks pretty it has nowhere near the resources of Gnome or KDE, nor the simplicity of Sway.

Not many people here use Hyprland, and we will have trouble diagnosing your issue.

Posting hardware details as web-searchable text is a good start (but would be more readable is you had used the pre-formatted text format by clicking the </> button at the top of the text entry panel, which just puts 3 backquotes on separate lines before and after the pasted text, so easily fixed). You may get advice from users with similar hardware.

It isn’t clear if the repair shop eventually did some repairs. If so, it would be good to know what they changed.

Random crashes are often hardware related. First things to do are:

  • try running with minimal number of external devices
  • reseat cables and connectors while inspecting for signs of corrosion (green scum), especially if you live in a hot, damp, region.
  • boot memtest86+ from a Live USB installer and run the default settings overnight for a couple nights.
  • check the system journal using journalctl in a terminal. If you are not familiar with journalctl, there is a Fedora introductory tutorial. Start by looking for high priority errors with journalctl --no-hostname -b -1 -p 3 after rebooting from a crash. If there is something that looks useful, add --no-pager to the command to wrap very long lines so they are readable os pre-formatted text.

If you have a way to connect to the system with ssh (another computer, tablet, or even phone) you can see if the kernel is still alive and maybe get details of the problem.

Your model has 4 LHDB Probes. There is a Dell USB device that is known to be problematic.

You’re on an MSI desktop right?

Edit, just looking for that dell device…

After it crashes, run

journalctl --since “5 minutes ago”

and post here

By dell device you mean the Microdia 2.4G Dongle, or did i understand something wrongly?

George is very highly skilled and I can’t see where he got that from??

The Microdia https://linux-hardware.org/?id=usb:0c45-8009 is reported as detected on every OS listed.

I disconnected the dongle and my microphone in order to check if it crashes again. I will get back later. Thanks for help!

How do i send you what came out of that command after crash, it’s so large i can not paste it or i would need to send it in 10 different messages, It’s 2500 lines long. I asked chatgpt and it said it only showed the things that happened after rebooting the pc, so i don’t think we can find anything useful there.

You can change it to 1 minute, or two minutes, or you can copy the last few lines, or whatever you think is relevant, or limit the number of results

journalctl -n 2

or filter

journalctl | grep Centaur

So as i said it only shows the logs after rebooting so i don’t think there is anything there.

There will be something there, look at the time stamps and scroll up to the minute before it crashed, or use the time filter in the attached link

Do test on another desktop though, it might just work

Also how are you installing the games it crashes on?

My journalctl logs go back to March 7th  Remember, if ChatGPT could solve your crash, you wouldn’t be here

I install them thru steam, but it also crashed when i was playing minecraft so I don’t think it’s the issue. Yeah i tried to fix it with chatgpt and it did nothing. Right now the problem is i don’t really know what i am looking for in the log.

I got it:

Just look for the time stamps for now to find the seconds or minute before the crash.

I have to log off for the night, its 2am  Maybe someone like @l-c-g will drop by, otherwise I’ll be back tomorrow.

Thanks for help! It’s the most progress i’ve done in a long time!

I would love to help, but I have not used an Nvidia GPU for about 10 years, sorry.

GPU is crashing. The question is if this is caused by Hyperland. Try to replicate
using GNOME or KDE.

I wonder if this is the infamous Intel Raptor Lake CPU bug.

Not sure if a Linux version exist

[UPDATE] I tried to play some games on Windows to be sure it’s just a Linux issue, and it turned out that the same thing happens on windows also.

I updated BIOS a few month after building the PC and also i updated to the latest version a month ago.

The only thing I see that is significant is the use of the hyperland desktop.
The fact that the same thing happens on windows would tend to indicate a hardware issue and not os nor driver related.

You said you built this machine, so it likely would be easy to remove and reinstall the GPU, which could fix the problem if it is related to a poor contact in the slot. Clean the contacts on the card with a rubber eraser while you have it out.

If cleaning contacts and reseating the GPU does not work then I would suggest the same as others above have done. Try either gnome or kde desktops to see if it may be directly related to the DE you are using.
