Hey there,
I recently switched over from Windows to Fedora KDE. After about half an hour of usage, my monitor (4K 60 fps) would start abruptly disconnecting and reconnecting with the associated sounds. This is repeating every seven seconds or so. This is something that’s definitely been seen before (see this post ), but this previous example was on an Nvidia graphics card and was an issue with the driver, whereas I’m on an AMD card.
In terms of troubleshooting:
Everything is updated using sudo dnf update
I’m currently dual booting Windows, and have zero graphical issues there
I’ve tried changing frame rates, resolution, etc. in the event that it’s a hardware issue, but no luck
I have two ideas what this could be: either it’s a hardware issue that’s suddenly sprang up that Windows can somehow mitigate, or something unique to Fedora. Any ideas as to how I could troubleshoot this?
We need more details from you.
Your system details from inxi -Fzxx (you may need into install inxi.
Have a look in both the system and user journals around the time this problem starts happening.
What logs do you see?
Have you tried a different cable to the monitor?
Have you tried using a different port on the GPU?

I wonder if non-native resolutions get scaled to native?
On several RX 580s and a 6600 XT I had to create a reduced-blank mode for stable 4K@60Hz all OSs; this should do it as a boot parameter:
video=HDMI-A-1:3840x2160MR@60
Didn’t work, unfortunately. Thanks for the suggestion.
Something mildly interesting. Here’s the output of the graphics section when the monitor is working:
Device-1: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Navi 32 [Radeon RX 7700 XT /
7800 XT] driver: amdgpu v: kernel arch: RDNA-3 pcie: speed: 16 GT/s
lanes: 16 ports: active: HDMI-A-1 empty: DP-1, DP-2, DP-3, Writeback-1
bus-ID: 03:00.0 chip-ID: 1002:747e
And when it isn’t working:
Device-1: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Navi 32 [Radeon RX 7700 XT /
7800 XT] driver: amdgpu v: kernel arch: RDNA-3 pcie: speed: 16 GT/s
lanes: 16 ports: active: none empty: DP-1, DP-2, DP-3, HDMI-A-1,
Writeback-1 bus-ID: 03:00.0 chip-ID: 1002:747e
For whatever reason, the HDMI port deactivates itself.
Update: I’ve disabled the idle dimming of the monitor and, although it’s set to turn off after 5 minutes (and it does), the disconnection has stopped happening. The monitor comes back without issue every time. Maybe this helps someone.
I have a similar situation on an RX 6800. Here my specs. Noted that sometimes it comes back after turning the monitor off for idling. Sometimes it does not and I SSH in and restart the whole system in those situations.
