Mirrorlist-missing error on kinoite update

Some weeks ago, I installed kinoite on my wife’s new laptop. She wanted something that she could use like her old chromebook.

However, now after every update, Discover comes up, and she gets a – disturbing to her – error message. Upon clicking details, it’s always basically this:

Now if you visit https://ostree.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist in a browser, you find it contains only this:

https://d2uk5hbyrobdzx.cloudfront.net/

If you go there in a browser, you get an “Index of /ostree/repo” with a list of files and directories, i.e. NO mirrorlist.
I think that is the source of the error. So the mirrorlist must be no longer at ostree.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist.

I believe that some old file is still being used, probably due to my needing to skip over an update (that had caused a login loop). If my theory is correct, the question is then how to replace the old file with the latest one?

The story of the login loop and update skip can be found in the thread entitled “In kinoite 40, Discover not offering 41”. You can see at the end of that thread, I posted the same error message, but I hoped then it would soon go away on its own. No luck there tho.

Any suggestions?

If you look at the contents of /etc/ostree/remotes.d/fedora.conf you should see the following:

contenturl=mirrorlist=https://ostree.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist

You can see the contenturl is using the mirrorlist= format.

The mirrorlist format that is supported by ostree is just a “plain text file of newline-separated URLs” (ostree.repo-config). And I believe it has always pointed to a single CloudFront domain. (See the history on the file in the Fedora package - Tree - rpms/fedora-repos - src.fedoraproject.org)

The CloudFront domain is a CDN for the ostree content, which is why you see Index of /ostree/repo because the ostree repo content lives there.

Now this doesn’t explain the error you are seeing, but hopefully provides a little more context.

I would ask if the error is repeatable every time Discover is used. Or if it is repeatable when doing rpm-ostree upgrade from the command line? Can you resolve https://ostree.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist when using curl from the command line? Are there additional logs from journalctl -b that might describe why the name resolution is failing?

In short, some additional information is needed to understand why the error is occurring and what triggers the error.

Yes, all that makes sense. So that means the only “mirror” is the cloudfront domain. That didn’t occur to me - I’m so used to seeing a list of URLs!

The message does appear with every upgrade, which of course my wife only does with Discover.

I just tried rpm-ostree upgrade, but of course there was nothing to do as we had just done one earlier. A reboot after that produced no message. (A no m

curl gives the same cloudfront url as I got in the browser.

Journalctl DOES show the error. (This was without the -b because it I needed to see the earlier boot.) Below is bunch of the entries surrounding the error(s), unfortunately without the journalctl highlighting.

The eight mirrorlist entries, which you will see are all in a row, were in red, along with the AutomaticUpdateTrigger line just after. The two “avahi-demon Missed message” entries earlier in the journal were in yellow. Also in yellow were the two Discover lines about four lines below the AutomaticUpdateTrigger. Then ALL of the “fedora plasma-discover” entries below are in yellow. There are more of those, but I thought I probably had included enough of them.

Hope this helps reveal the solution.

It looks like Discover tries to fetch updates before the network is ready. You can disable automatic update fetching and that should stop the error message from appearing.

Might be good to file a bug upstream.

@siosm Thanks! Discover in its settings is set for Update Software - Manually. However, as soon as Discover is opened, it starts Fetching right away (as displayed in the left hand column). Is that the behavior you think I should disable? If so, where is that done?

As far as reporting a bug goes, I’m still concerned this might be a one-off, that I caused with my update skip.

I saw another update was offered on my wife’s laptop, so I used rpm-ostree upgrade instead of Discover, as you suggested. This time, after the reboot, login, and Discover opening, there was NO error message.

So looks like Discover is the culprit.
