Minimal Desktop Experience for older hardware

Hi there all, I am wanting to switch back to Fedora on my older laptop (Celeron processor), and was trying to figure out the best way to get a minimal desktop experience while maintaining as few packages installed as possible.

My first thought was to install Server and install desktop components from there; but I wasn’t sure if that would be more work to maintain in the long run.

Has anyone ever tried this? Is there an easier way?

The everything (netinstall) iso allows the user to select exactly what they wish to install. There are also lightweight spins that can be used which are much less demanding than either Workstation or KDE as desktops.

Everything Netinstall .iso,
Custom Install (you might want the Network checkbox to ensure wifi)
and Sway Windows Manager is about the lightest you can get. Other WMs are also good.

You could try Fedora’s XFCE spin. Very nice and extremely responsive

Thanks for the recommendations, I always have one of Gnome or KDE installed and then a variety of tiling window managers (i3, BSPWM) — I haven’t yet played too much with Wayland compositors.

I have managed to get an install done this evening using the Fedora Everything ISO.

Thanks again
