I have been using Fedora 37 for a while, but just recently found out I cannot lock my computer as I rarely use this function. When I press Meta+L the computer suspends. Lock option is missing from the Power options (Shutdown, Restart, Logoff and Suspend are the only options). Is there a way to enable Lock computer feature?
Are you using Fedora Workstation? What is your hardware?
I’m using Fedora 37 with no customization except for the codecs to watch x264 and x265 encoded videos. It’s and older computer with Intel i3550 and P8Z77-V LX with 8 GB DDR3 1600 MHz and RX480 card. The monitor is a Dell U2417H and I use a HDMI 2.1 cable. It still going well for an office computer despite its age.
When I press Meta+L, the computer goes into suspension or standby and the monitor loses video signal.
Can you please quickly create a new user and see if the issue persists?
The output of fpaste --sysinfo --printonly
would also be very useful.
Below you can find the fpaste output:

That seems fine. Did the issue persist in a new user?
The issue happens as well when logging as a new user.
Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts
Are they OK, or something has changed?
No. I have never changed keyboard settings. I have just checked and Meta + L is configured for lock screen.
OK.
Settings → Power
carefully check all settings.
Do you have some gnome extensions, or tweaked something in order to suspend/hibernate your system?
When you enter Super+L, you not only lock the screen but put it in low power mode as well, so somehow you also manage to trigger cpu suspend. The fact that gnome does not have the “lock” in the menu suggests something is wrong in some settings.
Below are listed all settings with some comments regarding Power settings:
Devices
M705 = 50%
Wireless Keyboard K360 = Full (no percentage but the percentage bar is full)
Note that these two devices are connected using a USB receiver plugged into Dell U2417H monitor. Even if I connect the USB receiver directly to the computer case that does not solve my issue.
Power Mode = Balanced
Screen Blank = 15 minutes
Automatic Suspend = On (Submenu: When idle delay 1 hour)
Power Button Behavior = Suspend
Automatic Suspend → Off
then see what happens. Maybe a reboot is needed for good measure, the bios or something could be weird.
That does not solve the issue. The monitor goes blank, the applications like media player for example stops playing music and “Scanning for signal” notification appear on the monitor. If I press any key, after the monitor has gone blank, I got back to the welcome screen and media player plays from the point where it was interrupted. I believe I has something to do with the graphic card since I added it after I installed Fedora. I think I will reinstall Fedora once 38 will be released to see if this issue continues to happen.
Is anything logged when this happens?
I heavily suspect hardware, in particular a broken video card (yes, it happens more often than you think). Your system is very old, it could also be the motherboard, cpu, etc. I would put a fedora live, and other distributions, on an usb pen, boot with that and see what happens. Using ventoy
allows you to put more iso on it and boot independently many distributions.
There should be a lock to the left of the power button when you select the menu, I suspect it’s behavior is the same as Meta+L
Mine does not put the computer to sleep but does turn off the monitor.
From a terminal if you do loginctl lock-session
does it exhibit the same behavior, my machine does not turn off the monitor when I do this.
I did some testing and can report the following:
- If I boot from Fedora KDE Spin into live enviroment Meta+L works as expected. It looks like this is a Gnome issue.
- If I lock the computer clicking on the lock icon on the left of the power button, the result is the same as pressing Meta+L, monitor loses signal and the computer stays on (suspended).
- The command
loginctl lock-session
locks my computer fine. Sologinctl lock-session
from terminal works, but Meta+L does not. Thanks Joe Walker.
The issue might be caused by the wrong key code mappings for your keyboard model.
A simple workaround is to reassign the following shortcuts:
gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.media-keys \
| sort | grep -e hibernate -e suspend -e screensaver
You can go into keyboard settings → Keyboard Shortcuts View/Customize Shortcuts → Custom Shortcuts and add one using loginctl lock-session
and use Meta + L for the shortcut.
It seems that the problem I was reporting is “by design” (in Gnome at least). i didn’t know that otherwise I wouldn’t report it here. I think we can close this issue. Thanks to all, especially to Joe Walker and Vladislav Grigoriyev.
