Make jpeg the default format for screenshots

Hello. I am new to fedora and I love it. However, I have been trying to make jpeg to be the default extension for all screenshots, I am not successful. the default is png which is too large. I spent days trying all the command chatgpt gives me. I downloaded “dconf editor” and change it to jpg. Nothing works.
Any help, please?

A quick search for what you want to do gave many results, including this one.

ChatGPT is not the end all for providing accurate answers. Many are misleading or plain wrong.

I don’t know how to make jpg the default, but the screenshots are part of gnome on the Workstation edition so you may need to contact the gnome developers.

Thank you so much. It is a long article. I am going to take time to read it.
one question, please. Do this command convert the existing png images or will it make jpg the default extension? that’s what I am looking for: when I take screenshot so it can automatically be a jpg instead of png.

What desktop are you running? Gnome? KDE?

I think it is Gnome

Look into gnome-screenshot some users report that if taking screenshots from that app then it saves as jpeg

I just did a search for “gnome screenshot default format” and got a bunch of links to follow.

For KDE Plasma’s screen shot app, Spectacle, you can configure the format that it saves in.
The config lists more then 10 formats including PNG and JPEG.

There is not that much to be found that answers your question. The answer is that you cannot configure the format in which the screenshot is saved.

When using the Gnome Shell screenshot tool, you will need to convert the screenshots yourself. That can be automated using scripts as answered above. It could even be fully automated with the inotify tools. This tool can be set up to watch a directory, then execute a command if anything in that directory changes.

Alternatively, you can switch to a different tool that allows configuring the format of the output. With the “traditional” gnome-screenshot tool, this is possible.
