Lost HDMI/external monitor after recent update Fedora 42 workstation

I recently lost the use of my secondary external monitor (connects via HDMI) after a software update. I’ve got some older hardware and my system runs sluggish until I update the software. So I routinely run “sudo yum update” after boot/login (old habit). The monitor was working great until a reboot after a recent update (~5 days ago). I have verified the monitor and HDMI cable still work via another system. Yes, HDMI cable is plugged in, even replaced the HDMI cable, same problem. So I feel this has to be system/driver issue that was impacted with the update.

I’m a bit rusty and would love a little assistance/guidance. Any suggestions on what/where to look?

Without information about what exactly has been updated, it’s almost impossible to give any advice. You could try booting the previous kernel version and see if that solves the problem.

to get the list of updates pls run dnf history info last and copy paste the output as preformatted text ‘</>’ .

Thank you for the suggestion on the dnf history command Mark. I read through the man page and was able to rollback to the Transaction ID of the last known working point. Rebooted and got the second monitor to work again!

This is a great workaround until I take the time to weed through the packages for the update that caused the problem. At quick glance, there seems to have been a number of firmware updates in the update. I suspect one of those was the likely culprit.

The last output is not a successful transaction, because the previously installed versions are no longer available in the updates repository. That’s the reason why you can see all these lines

If rollback was successful, then the transcaction should be also listed in output of dnf history list.

You can check with rpm -qa linux-firmware intel-gpu-firmware the version numbers reported. It should still be the release from Aug 2025

So whatever restored the hdmi port was not a rollback or undo of transaction id 26

After digging around I found the nvidia-gpu-firirmware was the culprit. Using the dnf command, I was able to downgrade the package to 20250311.1.fc42. Then using the dnf versionlock plugin, I locked in the working firmware package. After several reboots and updates/upgrades the problem has been resolved. Thanks a million for the help on this.
