Login loop after fresh install (and xfconfd error)

Hi,
So I’ve performed a fresh install of fedora 30 cinnamon, everything went well except that I can’t get passed the login screen. Every time I enter my credentials, the screen goes black and prompt me with the login screen again.

I’ve tried a bunch of solutions that I’ve found online, the cinnamon spin, the xfce spin, openbox and i3wm and the workstation. Nothing worked.

I’ve also tried the steps related to this issue in the installation documentation, and I did managed to get to the desktop using the startx command (but I get an ugly cinnamon DE). Then I was prompt with 2 SElinux error messages, but following the recommendation one of them seems solved. The other one concerns colord (Attempted access: getattr).

I performed a system update, which worked fine but I’ve encountered the following error:

“Failed to get connection to xfconfd: The connection is closed.”

If it is relevant, I have an Nvidia GPU (gtx970).

Thanks!

I am experiencing a similar problem.
I am unable to login through my user account but for root account it works well.

Welcome to the community @swqdea. If you’ve not had a chance yet, please go through the introductory posts in the #start-here category. They provide useful information on using the platform well.

As for your issue, we need some more information to be able to diagnose the problem.

Have you not been able to login at all?

How did you test them?

  • Did you use their live images?
  • Did you freshly install each one by one?
  • Did you install these in the same system and test?

This is the xfce configuration daemon. Do you have XFCE installed on your system also?

https://wiki.xfce.org/releng/4.8/roadmap/xfconf

Possibly. We’ll need more information before we can know.

Would you please be able to paste the output of this command here?

sudo fpaste --sysinfo --printonly

Can you also look at your logs to see what errors are recorded there?

Hi @rishabh0402. Welcome to the community. Please take a look at the #start-here posts if you haven’t had a chance yet also.

While you may be experiencing a similar issue, it may not stem from the same cause. Could you please open a new topic with more information on your problem so we can deal with it separately?

Hi FranciscoD,
I was not able to login through the regular (GUI) login screen. However, I am able to login via terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F2) and then use the startx command to get to the Cinnamon DE.

I tried installing them one by one, each as a fresh install. I have a separate /home partition that I did not format. I did use their live image and installed them on the same system, with the same results.

I don’t have XFCE (never had before until I tried installing the XFCE spin for this very issue).

Thank you for taking the time to help me!

journalctl is giving me errors in the likes of:

dbus-broker-launch[1170]: Activation request for 'org.a11y.atspi.Registry' failed.
gkr-pam: unable to locate daemon control file
dbus-broker-launch[1290]: Activation request for 'org.a11y.atspi.Registry' failed.
dbus-broker-launch[1582]: Activation request for 'org.a11y.atspi.Registry' failed.

Update:
Login in via a new account (created by login in as root and startx), everything works as it should. So this could be a partial solution to the problem… However, I cant delete the original account as all my data are on it, so I complete solution (which does not involve switching account) still remains to be found.

Hi, I have a similar problem with a fresh install of Fedora xfce 30:
At the end of the boot process when the login screen appears asking me for username and password, i can not login instantly instead the login screen reappears again. Only when I re-enter my password I am able to log in.
currently I’m working on it.
