I created a Fedora Workstation 44 live USB using Balena Etcher to install the system on a Dell Inspiron 3240 (i3, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD), but the installer reaches this screen and stays there indefinitely. If I click the installer icon, a spinning wheel appears for a few seconds, but then nothing else happens. The same thing happens with the Files or Firefox icons. The only thing that responds is the power control when I tap the battery icon.
I’ve used balena etcher because my macos os said that fedora writer could not be opened.
Edit:
After many hours without any success I gave up and went to MXLinux which works perfectly on my hardware.
Anyway, I’m very grateful to the community for their responses and helpfulness. I’ll definitely try installing Fedora again when I have another computer with better specs.
The comment by Barry above appears correct in my experience.
I am using f44 Workstation and that image you show is exactly what I see when I first boot and log in. Click on the desktop background and it should go full screen and you will be on your way.
First of all, thank you very much for your kind reply.
What you suggested was the first thing I tried; I even tested both desktops, but nothing happens. I can only see a context menu when right-clicking—to change the background or display settings—but those options don’t work either. Whichever one I choose, a spinning wheel appears for a few seconds, and then nothing else happens.
I’m wondering if the installation icon with the progress bar is supposed to be static or if it should be indicating something. I assume it’s static because it looks exactly the same even after leaving it for an hour.
I also tried booting the system in basic graphics mode; the only difference is that the screen looks distorted, but I still can’t access any other elements.
I should mention that I previously had Linux Mint installed on this machine without any issues, but I wanted to test the performance of Fedora—which came highly recommended—though this situation is absolutely frustrating.
Thank you for your reply. I am not sure if clicking the desktop is supposed to trigger an action, because when I do, the only result is that the desktop expands to fill the entire screen, but nothing else occurs.
One thing I have noticed is that the USB activity light never stops blinking, but aside from that, nothing happens regardless of how long I wait.
Using the Super key (also referred to as the windows key) (lower left of the keyboard, usually between ctrl & alt) opens the taskbar at the bottom of the screen.
Using SuperA opens the full app menu to select what apps to launch.
The full menu is also opened by clicking on the small white icon in the upper left corner of the screen or by simply moving the mouse to the upper left corner which is usually a hot corner intended to open the app menu.
From the taskbar or from the full menu then clicking on an icon for the app of choice will launch that app. Apps can also be pinned to or removed from the taskbar with a right click on the icon.
Fedora has chosen to keep the app menu hidden instead of cluttering the desktop with icons as some distros, including windows, may do.
I observed installations in a VM with 2GB Memory is very slow. Then when you click to open the installer again you get the message that the installer runs already.
That is not my case. I’m using a basic but usable i3 with 8GB ram and 256SSD. I been waiting for many hours without any change, so I gave up and tried mxlinux, which installed without any problems and even recognized my wifi card that always gave me problems in ubuntu derivatives.
Anyway, I’m very grateful to the community for their responses and helpfulness. I’ll definitely try installing Fedora again when I have another computer.
