Libreoffice Scrolling with Text Selection broken on Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop 43

Hi, I’m writing here cause I wasn’t able to find any solution on my own regarding this issue despite looking at other similar situations which were quite similar or identical to this one.

The issue is that the scrolling in LibreOffice Writer is laggy and isn’t uniform making pauses and then resuming without a smooth animation, this doesn’t allow precise user selection while selecting text and then scrolling downwards or upwards to select more text. This also creates a unpleasant experience with the software. Scrolling with touchpad or mouse scroll wheel also has the same effect, despite the scrolling with the handle on the screen being smooth.

I tried starting LibreOffice in X11 mode instead of Wayland using the following env parameter before starting LibreOffice. I also tried using GTK3 backend. None of them, also combining both, didn’t fix the issue.

The following environment variables have been used and confirmed working in the LibreOffice Information page.

QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb to launch in X11 mode.
SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk3 to launch with GTK3.

Fedora 43 has been cleanly installed about a month ago and this issue has been here since the installation with KDE Plasma 6.4. All updates have been applied and LibreOffice is running 25.8.5.2.

LibreOffice Flatpak is affected as well.

LibreOffice AppImage (https://libreoffice.soluzioniopen.com/stable/full/LibreOffice-fresh.full-x86_64.AppImage) which is apparently a way older version of LibreOffice (should be from 2022) works perfectly.

Other OSes (Linux Mint, Kubuntu and Ubuntu) work well, first one is X11 while the two Ubuntu-based ones are using Wayland too.

If anyone has any idea or thing to try, I’d be glad to hear them and really thank you all in advance.

I think I’m having the same issue. If you highlight text, and try to highlight below the bottom of the screen, it stalls, doesn’t continue selecting text, and then it flies down a full page or more. Really big issue for me. Had to start using OpenOffice.

From my tests, I can say that all Fedora 43 KDE installations are affected, both standard and Kinoite. I tried on both my laptop and a gaming PC, and with both pure install and with updates applied. The result was still the same. OpenOffice does work probably because it doesn’t include the change which let to this issue (LibreOffice AppImage from 2022 is fine).

I’m currently using OnlyOffice which is a more up-to-date alternative of LibreOffice.

A solution could be to disable Smooth Scrolling, in case it’s enabled (Options → LibreOffice Writer → View → Smooth scroll).

It doesn’t fix the issue. I forgot to state also that in the main post.

Disabling Smooth Scrolling and Hardware Acceleration did not adress the issue in any way. Keeping Smooth Scrolling off actually made it worse.

I think it would be worth reporting this bug to the kde folks.

Disabling smooth scrolling, or enabling it, didn’t make a difference.

Using Fedora 43 with KDE, but wayland and X11 show same symptom. Installed from the Fedora repository. Currently on 6.18.16-200.fc43.x86_64 but also on previous kernels.

I don’t understand how such a serious problem as this hasn’t attracted some attention. Similar posts going back years.

Highlighting text with mouse, holding left button, selects current screen but then no further for a few seconds, then jumps down x lines, stalls, another x lines. Not down a page, or down a paragraph or down a discernible pattern.

I am using GNOME, so I cannot replicate this, but I can image how this can be annoying. My personal experience is that selecting multi-page text using the keyboard (e.g. with Ctrl+Shift+PageDown) works better and I am more productive, so this might be a workaround people having this issue have found effective too.

Yes, I’ve read that workaround, but such a basic function, I will go to OpenOffice or other because it’s so frustrating.
