LibreOffice ignores Light theme on KDE Plasma Dark — workaround using GTK3 + Adwaita:light

  1. Fedora 44 + KDE Plasma + Wayland
  2. LibreOffice 26.2.6.3
  3. KDE global theme: Ant-Dark
  4. LibreOffice’s own Light appearance was ignored
  5. SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gen produced Light but an undesirable old-looking UI
  6. SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk3 alone remained dark
  7. GTK_THEME=Adwaita:light SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk3 libreoffice produced the desired modern Light UI
  8. the wrapper script is:
    ~/.local/bin/libreoffice-light
    #!/bin/bash
    export GTK_THEME=Adwaita:light
    export SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk3
    exec /usr/bin/libreoffice “$@”
  9. change the Exec line in
    ~/.local/share/applications/libreoffice-startcenter.desktop
    from Exec=libreoffice %U to Exec=~/.local/bin/libreoffice-light %U
  10. the workaround may need adjustment because LibreOffice can reuse an existing process

Thanks for sharing. Please file a bug in libreoffice upstream so that it can be fixed.

I’m going to move this to Ask Fedora , because this use case “I want KDE dark environment, but light Libreoffice” doesn’t seem to enough high-profile for Ask Fedora > Common Issues .
