I have recently switched from Windows 11 (yay spyware) to Fedora v. 44. I used the online ISO where you can select which packages you want to install; I believe this may be the source of my issue as I am somewhat familiar with Linux as a developer, but often get lost in all the tooling. I am using the KDE Plasma desktop and below are my hardware specs:
The Problem:
When I open LibreOffice Writer and press the “View” tab in the toolbar, both of my monitors go black for a second. When they turn back on, my LibreOffice Writer has crashed with a message saying KWin has crashed. If I have FireFox open, that will crash too, though I believe that can be easily attributed to KWin crashing.
What I have tried:
Putting LibreOffice Writer into safe mode with default configuration settings
Updated from the discover app and restarted
Anyone know how to fix this? Thank you!
SOLUTION:
Using Nvidia drivers fixed this issue. I had mistakenly assumed Fedora was using compatible drivers since my games and displays were working just fine. I am still experiencing some other issues, but I don’t think they’re directly related, so I will mark this discussion as solved. Thank you everyone for your help!
I’m running the following version and cannot reproduce the Kwin crash. I also do not get any warnings about missing libs when I fire it up with libreoffice --writer
The fact that the screens go black suggests a video driver issue to me; I’m running an AMD GPU but I recently switched from nvidia with the rpmfusion drivers and I also had no problem with this package then either.
Get any smoking guns in the journal when you trigger this issue?
Have a look at the user journal for details of the kwin crash.
It’s also worth looking in the system journal for logs at the time of the crash as well.

We do not normally recommend users install packages that are out-of-tree.
Doing so means the packages are not routinely updated when the rest of the system is updated and can easily result in other problems, especially when performing a fedora version upgrade.
As much as is humanly possible we always recommend that users install and upgrade packages that are provided directly from fedora to avoid issues with updates across the board.
