I keep getting an error saying there are broken dependences for “libheif-freeworld” when trying to update fedora from the Konsole.
I’ve seen other posts elsewhere talking about this and tried some suggested solutions like removing libheif-freeworld and then reinstalling it, but that didn’t seem to make the error go away. Instead I think it may have made it worse because I was seeing another skipped package after doing that reinstall, at least until I did system upgrades through the Discover store and it reverted the error back to how it was pictured above. (I think)
You don’t need to do anything. It’s a packaging issue, I think the rpmfusion package is ahead, when the base library in fedora has also been updated this will go away. Just update as usual, and when the repos are in sync this package won’t be skipped.
You don’t provide information about what you did. I can’t guess without more information. If currently when you try to update from the terminal, and what you get is shown in the screenshot, then you don’t have to do anything. Nothing is broken.
A word of advise for the future, don’t type in commands from random places without understanding what they do. If you get an error doing something, note that down, ask in an appropriate forum, e.g. if it is Fedora provided software, or even a hardware issue on a Fedora system, you can ask here. And people will try to help. Bottom line is, if you try things blindly, then instead of 1 problem, now you have 2 problems. So best first to understand what’s the issue, then try to solve it methodically.
As for skipped dependencies, it’s not exactly an error. This happens when package dependencies cannot be satisfied for subset of packages. Instead of breaking the whole update, dnf skips the subset that’s broken, and updates the rest. The reason for the breakage could be:
dependent packages come from separate repos (that’s often the case for codecs because of licensing concerns) and they are not in sync,
there is a packaging bug in one of the updated packages
your local package database is corrupted. This is the most severe situation, but not particularly difficult to solve.
In this case, it’s the first option, and you don’t need to do anything.
The main point that was being made in the other posts was to wait until the fedora and rpmfusion repos were in sync (as @fatka has said).
I saw the message about libheif-freeworld when running the update command yesterday, and decided to wait. I’ve tried again this morning, and everything is now in sync and I have updated successfully.
