This problem started 3 days ago. Suspend used to work just find before this. But now when I put my laptop in suspend:
It goes into suspend like normal
After a few seconds, fans ramp up a lot and then calm down after 5 seconds
I can still wake up the laptop at this point
But after a minute the laptop just shuts down
Here is the output of journalctl -o short-precise -b -1
around the time I hit suspend

Since this issue is so repeatable I did it again and actually noted down the times
22:44:10 Hit suspend
22:44:49 Fans ramp up
22:45:20 Shuts down
The times above recorded on my phone so there is a slight delay of 2 seconds I believe.
Output of journalctl -o short-precise -b -1

I believe you are hitting a S0ix issue.
We are tracking improving S0ix support in this other thread, you can go there for more information:
First, I should start with the obligatory LTT Modern Standby video:
[Microsoft is Forcing me to Buy MacBooks - Windows Modern Standby]
Essentially, S0ix (also called Modern Standby) has been available for a while now.
The quick rundown of the history is that previously the most common sleep mode was sleep-to-ram (S3), but Intel had decided that it wanted to make laptops more like phones, and now we have Modern Standby (S0ix).
The thing is, S3 sleep relies mostly on the firmware t…
What you will need to do to fix is run this command and check the output:
$ cat /sys/power/mem_sleep
[s2idle] deep
If s2idle
appears between the square brackets, you are using S0ix.
If deep
also appears, then the old S3 method is available for your machine and you can enable it by adding mem_sleep_default=deep
to the kernel command line parameters.
Again, please read the S0ix thread for more info.
I went through it once and here’s all the things I tried
❯ cat /sys/power/mem_sleep
[s2idle]
Ran the S0ixSelftestTool
❯ sudo ./s0ix-selftest-tool.sh -s

I also saw your comment regarding some NVIDIA issues on the other thread and made the suggested changes
❯ cat /usr/lib/modprobe.d/nvidia-power-management.conf
#
# Save and restore all video memory allocations.
# options nvidia NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1
options nvidia NVreg_EnableS0ixPowerManagement=1
#
# The destination should not be using tmpfs, so we prefer
# /var/tmp instead of /tmp
options nvidia NVreg_TemporaryFilePath=/var/tmp
And the issue still occurs. Am I missing something obvious?
Suspend used to work just fine a few days ago and broke quite recently.
It seems your system supports S0ix only. This might always been the case or changed recently with a BIOS or kernel update (Manufacturers can sometimes remove S3 support on BIOS updates and the kennel will always prefer S0ix if the BIOS advertises it)
Your logs don’t tell me much about what might cause it, you might need more verbose logs (maybe debug logs?) to try to figure what broke.
It’s very likely to be a kernel bug so reverting kernels might help.

It’s the kernel?! So I realized that my GRUB had an option to try out older kernels. 6.3.6
and 6.3.5
both have the same issue. But suspend works just fine on 6.2.15
. I assume there’s a deeper problem here but hopefully this works as a nice stopgap solution.
P.S. Haha your reply came in just as I was typing this XD
So kernel 6.2.15
works. Do I just wait till an update comes around and fixes it?
The GRUB menu seems to list the last 3 kernels. So if the new update is broken too then I’ll be stuck with 3 broken kernels. I guess there’s a way to manually revert the kernels too.
Ideally you should report the kernel bug into either the RedHat bugzilla or the https://bugzilla.redhat.com/ .
However I don’t know what steps you should take to have more useful data (such as logs) to add into the report.
Try the REdHat bugzilla first and they might be able to instruct you better.
