Kernel versions after 6.6.2-201 make my external monitor and steam games to not work anymore

Hello,

Like in the title, kernel versions after 6.6.2-201 make my external monitor and steam games to not work anymore (e.g. Dota 2 error: Unable to query size of supported swapchain formats) and now I’ve lost 6.6.2 kernel after I’ve updated it.
I’ve tried all kernels after 6.6.2 including 6.7.4-200.fc39.x86_64, none worked for me.

I’ve searched solutions, but I can’t figure it out, I’ve tried to delete nvidia drivers and use akmod to install them back, doesn’t work.
Using nvidia-smi returns :

I’m having a Lenovo Legion 5i Pro laptop.

Thank you for your time!

L.E.: my external monitor wasn’t plugged in when I used the commands and I posted this. It connects with HDMI if it counts for anything.

The listing for installed packages shows that the nvidia-gpu-firmware package is not installed. That is a firmware package that comes from fedora and is required for proper operation of the nvidia GPU.

Please reinstall that package with sudo dnf install nvidia-gpu-firmware then reboot.
Hopefully that will fix the issue with the monitor.

I thought about that, but I’ve seen somewhere that the nvidia-gpu-firmware should be present for rawhide kernel and I don’t think I have rawhide.

I’ve installed it, thou, and I tested with the steam game, but I’ve got the same error as before and I think the steam games and the external monitor problems are related. I will test the external monitor tomorrow when I’ll get home.

Thank you for the reply anyway!

It does not matter what version of fedora you are running. That package is required for an nvidia GPU since the gpu firmware interfaces between the hardware and the driver.

I believe what you read intended to say that you may need to install that firmware with rawhide, not that it is exclusively for use with rawhide.

I understand, I’ve tested with the external monitor, too, but unfortunately it doesn’t work.

This is the new list:

That does now show the full package list so now we need to know if the driver is loading. The last inxi output you posted showed the driver was loaded but apparently not properly supporting the external monitor.

Since this is a laptop it seems likely that it is using the iGPU and for some reason is not supporting the external port. Some laptops dedicate the external port to the dGPU so the drivers must work properly.

There is a work-around that seems to work for some and places the dGPU actively supporting both monitors.

This has seemed to work for almost all, but does require that the user use xorg for it to be effective since it is definitely focused on X11. It is at least worth a try to see if it works with X11. If it does then you can choose to run X11 and have the external monitor working, or use wayland and not have the external monitor working.

Note also that those instructions only place the nvidia gpu as primary after editing the nvidia.conf file once it has been placed in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/. Placing the file there allows the nvidia gpu to manage both screens when it is used, but does not automatically make the nvidia gpu primary. Only the part of step 8 that edits the file makes it primary…

Yes, but I want to find a solution without using X11 and Nvidia as primary or only using Nvidia. I don’t understand how with 6.6.2.-201 kernel it works and with the all other up to date kernels it doesn’t work, I will try to install back the old kernel, but I want to have the benefits of the newer kernels, too, I don’t think this is a solution for the long term(to remain on 6.6.2-201) and it baffles me.

L.E.: This is with the monitor connected:

I’m using Zsh and the kmod is written in red color like in the picture, I don’t know if this suppose to signal a problem or not, I thought I should mention it.

L.L.E.: I’ve installed back the 6.6.2-201 and the monitor and the steam games work as expected now. The red color is the same for 6.6.2, I don’t think it’s a problem there, I read somewhere that it’s something about updates availability, or something, I don’t remember exactly.

This is the list for nvidia and inxi with 6.6.2 kernel:

Strange regression…

any other ideas, anyone?

It still doesn’t work properly, I tried it now with 6.7.5-200, still no external monitor and the same error on steam.

You need to look for relevant details using journalctl and Nvidia tools. With journalctl you can compare a boot that works with one that fails. You will have to work on a search pattern that focuses on the problem. It is also time to rule out obscure hardware problems. Recent kernels/firmware may be more fussy about HDMI cable specs. Can you try connecting the monitor using a different cable or port? It is also worth checking for problem reports with you model on other linux distros and lenovo-specific forums.

I will try to use another connecting port and see what happens, I think is somehow related to Nvidia driver or something because of the steam game errors that occurs in the same time with the external monitor issue. I will look into journalctl and lenovo issues, too.
Thank you for the hints!

This is the results after journalctl for errors and warnings on 6.7.6-200:

Well that’s a problem. . . You kinda need the compositor. I just got here so I’ll read this thread back, see if I can provide more feedback.

If you are on Gnome can you tell me if you have any Crash Reports in Problem Reporting ?

This can be tied to Bugzilla using the api key from your accunt, so if you have a Bugzilla account you can easily report bugs !

@formidabilus I’m looking through the journalctl -b -1 | grep 'error \| warning' you just posted, I’ll chime in here in a bit.

AFAIK steam does not work well with wayland which is the DE that shows in your inxi output. Have you tried steam on xorg?

To me this seems 2 separate issues. Second monitor is one the other is steam problems.

It may be separate issues, but I have Fedora with Wayland for at least 1 year and I didn’t have problems with it, maybe from time to time a kernel was problematic for me, but I waited for the next version and it was solved, but after 6.6.2-201 I had no luck until now with all the new kernel versions and it doesn’t seem normal. Many people had problems from what I see on forums with 6.6.x kernels and it looks a bit sketchy.

I also have Fedora/Wayland, Steam from the repos, and many flatpaks. The compositor issue is strange, because gnome is a protected package. I would try a dnf distro-sync if only to see if gnome would get updated, you can preview the list before you apply the update.

Note: Do you have another DE / WM installed as well?

As for the kernels and the Nvidia driver, I’m not much help. I don’t use Grub, I don’t install Nvidia drivers from RPMFusion, I don’t use akmods to do those updates. I also do not recommend my steps to others as many people have different configurations and update cycles. RPMFusion is the more supported method for this here on the forum. So outside of just recommending reinstall full the Nvidia driver, make sure you have all the kernel-devel packages etc.

I’ve updated the previous comment with the errors for 6.6.2-201 for comparison.

This is what I have in logs for important:

And for Problem reporting I have ony:

dota2 quit unexpectedly
The application encountered a problem and could not continue

that I think it was regarding another problem from Dota2 that was patched by Valve, it was a crash that occurred when I was in game, happened with kernel 6.6.2-201 that let me open the game, with the newer kernels I couldn’t even open the game, the SwapChain error was thrown like I said in the first post.

ok, I’ll recheck.

This is the result for distro-sync:

❯ sudo dnf distro-sync
[sudo] password for vnm_rzv:
Last metadata expiration check: 1:01:24 ago on Jo 29 feb 2024 19:24:43 +0200.

Is this ok [Y/n]:

I have GNOME and I think X11 that came by default beside Wayland.

Just to ask, do you have Secure Boot enabled on this machine?

If you are willing to try, We can uninstall the Nvidia driver,

dnf -y remove nvidia-* && dnf -y update --best --refresh

then,

dnf install nvidia-driver nvidia-driver-libs.i686 nvidia-settings akmod-nvidia && dnf -y upgrade --best --allowerasing

Let me know what happens afterwards. I should be on for approx. 2hrs. Then see you all tomorrow.
