KDE Discover asking for confirmation to remove kernel packages (F44)

,

Hello everyone,

first of all thanks for reading and trying to help me out.

I upgraded from Fedora 43 to 44 yesterday, on my HP laptop, through KDE Discover. Everything seems to be working fine. Today I tried to run the updates through Discover again, and it now asks me for confirmation that certain packages will be removed to install certain other packages. That hasn’t happened to me before, so I came here to ask whether that’s a normal thing I can confirm, or if it’s a sign of some trouble on my machine. Sadly I cannot copy the message; I’ll state examples and see if that’s enough information to answer the question.

packages to be removed: kernel, kernel-core, kernel-devel, kernel-modules etc. all with the appendage (6.19.11-200.)fc43

packages to be installed: SDL3 (3.4.8.-1.fc44), cpp (16.1.1-1.fc44) etc.

So, in short: can I just confirm this?

They are kernels from the F43 installation (see the fc43 at the end). As you’re not using them I would say they are perfectly fine to remove.

Thank you very much! I suspected it would be ok, but I wasn’t quite sure as there didn’t seem to be newer kernel packages being installed.

You can always check to see what you have installed, and don’t forget that the currently running kernel will never be removed (can’t be, as it’s in use!) so you’ll never be left with nothing to boot.

I think Discover shouldn ask for confirmation for uninstalling this kind of packages. Last day I had also to confirm uninstallation of some old kmod packages, which they are harmless to remove.
