JDownloader2 stopped working after updatre

I am on Fedora Linux 44 (COSMIC) x86_64. Earlier this week, on Friday, September 4th i clicked Update all in Cosmic Store and some time later I restarted JDownloader2, only to have it never launched again.

When I launch it from the terminal, it only displays some warnings but does not terminate.

m@fedora:~/.jd2$ ./JDownloader2
WARNING: package com.sun.awt not in java.desktop
WARNING: package com.sun.java.swing.plaf.windows not in java.desktop
WARNING: package sun.security.action not in java.base
WARNING: A restricted method in java.lang.System has been called
WARNING: java.lang.System::load has been called by net.sf.sevenzipjbinding.SevenZip in an unnamed module (file:/home/m/.jd2/libs/sevenzipjbinding.jar)
WARNING: Use --enable-native-access=ALL-UNNAMED to avoid a warning for callers in this module
WARNING: Restricted methods will be blocked in a future release unless native access is enabled

At first I thought that my installation is corrupted, so I launched the install script again and here’s something weird: it doesn’t start either but displays an error:

m@fedora:~/Pobrane$ ./JDownloader2Setup_unix_nojre.sh
Starting Installer ...
Could not display the GUI. This application needs access to an X server.

You can also run this application in unattended mode without
access to an X server by passing the argument -q

I hoped reinstalling Java runtime would solve the issue, as it was the only thing I had to install before JDownloader so i tried sudo dnf reinstall java-latest-openjdk but it didn’t help.

What else can I do?

What version of Jave / OpenJDK do you have installed? From your DNF command, I’m guessing it’s OpenJDK 27 (based on a local DNF query on F44).

Documentation for this seems to be a bit lacking, but looking at this, JDownloader Support - Installation and troubleshooting on NAS and embedded devices it should likely work with OpenJDK 27, though the provided link says they recommend LTS releases, so you may have better luck with OpenJDK 25 sudo dnf install java-25-openjdk.

I’d probably recommend to try using the Flatpak for this, or possibly a Docker/Podman container.

If you really want to try and see what broke though, you should be able to use the dnf history list and dnf history info <transaction> to get information on exactly which packages were updated when you say JDownloader2 stopped working.

I removed java-lastest-openjdk and installed java-25-openjdk and it’s back to normal.

What’s weird is that there were no changes made to seemingly java-related packages during the time period for which i investigated dnf history but I’m not going to dwell on it.

Thank you!

are you using flatpak or the package from fedora?

i see you are trying to run a installation script of jdownloader via konsole, i never did that, i just use the flatpak and never have issues
