TITLE UPDATE: This thread is about all flatpak updates (CLI & Discover) having issues with dropped connections at repo host end - not just in Discover only.

Hi All, Just checking on best place to ask about issues with Discover continually having technical issues with downloading updates from repositories from a specific country. Will this be a Fedora distro issue, or KDE/Discover Store one? Or related to the external repositories? i.e. is here best place to start for someone to comment on possible cause/options to investigate? Didn’t want to file a bug unnecessarily.
The issue appears to relate to where I am downloading from (New Zealand). About 75%+ of updates, including most system & OS ones, fail with a generic technical issue. This happens regardless of whether I use VPN (via Proton) locally (just to NZ connection), or don’t use a VPN at all - either way Discover has an issue downloading.
However, if I VPN (from NZ) to somewhere in the USA, or UK, Germany or any other country I try Discover connects out from there fine and downloads the updates with no issues - so it seems to be something directly related to being located in NZ in someway.
A cursory look at some dnf logs and similar occasionally only shows these types of errors (I’ve truncated the url - but present for several apps and similar) which don’t seem overly useful: Status code: 404 for https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/network: … and nothing else, and they seem to have a hard failure after several retries when connecting from NZ (and regardless of presence of VPN or not).

(P.S. I’ve been running Fedora KDE Plasma for about 20 months now, and this issue started around 10-12 months ago after a version update, so possibly F42 or more likely post-F43, and has got progressively more common since.)
A 404 is the server saying that it cannot find the requested resource. There are two possible reasons: your client’s metadata is outdated and it is requesting old things that the server no longer has, or the metadata is up to date and the server (mirror) that your system is choosing is lagging behind and does not yet have the new file that your client requests.
Next time this happens, I suggest you look at the version of the problematic package and compare it to the version on https://packages.fedoraproject.org/ (or whatever other source the package is from, the example does not appear to be a Fedora URL) to figure out which it is.
Yes - and I often use dnf myself so that’s not the issue - my question is why does Discover have these issues only when it tries to do updates from NZ and not any other country?
Thanks - yeah familiar with the 404 issue, etc, as have IT background/manage websites/etc. The first option seems unlikely as it’s often a valid app I have installed AND as mentioned if I VPN to another country and run the update in discover it works. However the latter might be feasible if there are mirrors in NZ that are always out of date or behind…?
Yep will do - I did do this for a couple quite some time ago and couldn’t see anything obvious out of sync.
Good point. That may actually have been a bad example and not related to the issue - it was the only error I could find in the logs at the time the last failure happened 1½ days ago. So probably should have thought of that and not used it as an example.
To answer your question though, it’s a version of the Signal app - this shows in Discover as installed from Flathub Community however, so it’s likely redundant from an old temp install a while ago and clean ups haven’t removed it.
EDIT: confirmed it’s redundant so have removed the repository file manually - so definitely unrelated to issue I originally described in first post, sorry about any confusion.
Will do - I have tried that in the past and it may not have the same error. But will do so as soon as I get a re-occurrence next few days.
Flathub uses the Fastly CDN, and that has certainly been reported to cause speed and connectivity problems in some locations. Not sure if NZ is one of them.
It would be interesting to try flatpak update from a terminal and see whether or not this has the same struggles as updating from Discover.
Thanks - good to know. The issue does affect some flatpak app updates but also system updates so presume this won’t affect the latter?
As an aside I also just noted this issue below, which may be related/similar cause thinking about it - although my issue has happened for many months not just recently in the last 3-4.
Will do - I do think that will possibly work OK as dnf update usually does IIRC - but will try it and advise - will wait until I get a known issue with Discover (which shouldn’t take too long).

Running sudo dnf update was successful - results here:
Refreshing Discover resulted in it showing all up to date and ready to restart to install updates. So as mentioned dnf usually works, it’s only if updating through Discover there’s an issue (which seems to be connection related)…

So seems to continue to suggest it may be VPN related? It looks like it’s almost looking at the wrong repository when on the VPN…?
Yes I saw those - Gnome seems to relate to GearLever - I will have a look and see if there is a newer version to update it.
EDIT: Resolved - for some reason it needed to be manually updated (by downloading latest version from github), even the internal check for updates in the app wasn’t working. The installed version was 13 months old now replaced with latest version from July. So it’ sjust all those WINE warnings.
Obviously I do have WINE installed, also along with Bottles and Lutris (for running old Windows games, etc); plus I have Steam installed too for similar reason, but don’t actively use it currently. So the wine references could be to any of those I guess?
Any suggestion on how to determine if they are redundant or what originally installed them/what has them as a dependency?
But they aren’t what’s erroring on the updates - in this case it was the Proton Pass, Standard Notes & Steam apps that wouldn’t update - and the repositories being accessed issue, on versus off, the VPN - giving that No such ref <path> in remote flathub message if on the VPN…
I’m still somewhat bemused as to why using a VPN causes the intermittent issues with updates, and those only with some apps (plus system updates), given they always work fine immediately after when no VPN is present…?
Does updating Flathub apps always fail over the VPN? (For example, in your last screenshot you show Proton Pass, Standard Notes and Steam - and all three of those fail.)
I’d suspect some connectivity issue between the VPN server and Fastly CDN in that case.
In situations where Discover only has a “system update” to execute (i.e. dnf packages) and there are no updates to Flatpak apps - does that ever fail?
No. All 3 of those failed but at other times they will work. It’s intermittent and appears broadly random… (I must confess i have been lazy and not kept a manual log of what things it’s failed on each time).
Yes - I’ve presumed it’s probably connectivity at the other end, and I’m also inclined to think it’s less likely it’s the specific VPN itself because (a) it doesn’t happen consistently with updates, and (b) it’s there are no issues with anything else I do or access through the VPN (other than the odd site that completely blocks all access to anyone using a VPN which is obviously unrelated).
So I’ve suspected it’s something at the Host / Fastly CDN end; causing it to intermittently drop or refuse connections coming through VPNs - since it never happens with a raw connection sans VPN, and in both cases it’s originating out of the same country.
Yes. Again intermittently and about as frequently as it does with random apps.
However I’ve also never seen dnf update fail on anything when I’ve tried it (but that’s only been occasionally - I haven’t tried it every time Discover has failed). Having said that I hadn’t really done flatpak update regularly - so will confess I hadn’t thought to check it against Discover to compare error messages or lack there of previously…
