In the workstation edition the root password is disabled by default similar to Ubuntu. I like this as I do not have to remember another password and I never log in directly as root anyways. I was looking at installing the Cinnamon Spin and I noticed that the Spin editions still have the root account creation in the installation process. Can I leave this field blank, and if so what exactly does it do? Thanks!
Hello @vampirefox3! Welcome to the community. Please have a look at the #start-here here posts if you haven’t had a chance yet.
I’ve not tried the spins out this release, but in general, leaving the root password blank locks the account. I expect that would also apply to the installer (if it does let you leave it blank).
Are you installing Fedora 29?
It seems that the possibility to lock the root account during the installation process was introduced in Fedora 30.
The image below comes from the F30 Cinnamon installer.
