like…battery wise.
would it extend my battery life if i use a core ultra 5 225h?
context: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/developer/articles/tool/epp-tuning-package-linux.html
I have not used it, but from the linked page, it says it used ‘tuned’ to optimise for intel processors.
So if you are currently using a less optimised power manager - then yes it should
fedora uses tuned by default, right?..this adds a new profile
i was hoping to get baseline results for battery discharge for core ultra 5s when idle…i get like 7w on idle…
7w is standard for a laptop. It’s not bad even! On a SBC, like RockPro64, it uses 4w on idle.
The tuned profile won’t lower your base power usage, but it should, as Intel claim, lower power used while for example watching videos.
really?
this guy was claiming 2w and stuff with a v processor..so i was kinda hoping an h would get around 4,5w lol
cuz it lasts a lot longer on windows…hope intel helps optimize it for linux as well
Note that the OP in that thread does not actually give evidence of the claims.
Andrei’s post there starts to detail how to save power, and it is worth following through and experimenting with tuned.
Turning off wifi, not having extra disks or USB’s is a good start. Different desktops also might consume different levels of power.
Let us know how you get on and what you find - and post screenshots or photos of your power meter ![]()
Will do! Another issue is that I run Fedora off my SSD, which is connected through the USB-C port… so some power goes there. ![]()
I’m not sure I can use powertop --auto-tune because I’m worried it might affect my SSD
It should be fine. At most I would guess it would put the SSD into a low power state. SSD life is determined my maximum writes.
However - powertop is different from tuned, so pick one power management system at a time to play around with. As you are thinking of the Intel tuning settings, I would suggest you go with tuned.
No evidence of the claims? Did you not read my post? powertop says my laptop burns 2W after optimzations. How is that not evidence? Why are you so obsessed with trying to discredit my post which clearly demonstrates a satisfactory solution was found that lined up exactly with the desired improvements? Is that not indication that, if my laptop can idle as low as 2W, other laptops can too? Furthermore, is running a different distro at half the power consumption not evidence enough that further investigation was needed?
I swear, some people wonder why the “year of the linux desktop” keeps not happening, while treating new users like they’re morons. Big mystery with that one, lemme tell ya.
Hi Taylor,
My sincere apologies if I did not read the post or screenshots properly. The other thread decended into a real s*** show, and I have / had no intention of insulting anyone at all.
The reason I said ‘no evidence’ is simply that I did not see it. I’ve had another look, and admitedly I did not want to read a 53 post long argument. What I can find up front is this screenshot you posted. It says battery is discharging at 4.66 watts.
If I’ve missed something, please do post a screenshot for me so I can figure out how to achieve similar.
Again, my apologies, this community is normally quite friendly and most of us want to work together to enhance all our experiences.
Best regards,
Mat
Geez my bad too, I thought you were the other guy from that thread who was also going off about “no evidence, this is all BS” and I got real irritated real quick.
My apologies.
