Is installing the NVK driver a good idea?

I have a GTX 970 and have been having issues with the proprietary driver for a few months now. I’ve been following the NVK driver for a while and noticed recently that the Mesa page (https://docs.mesa3d.org/drivers/nvk.html) says it supports most 900 series cards. With that being said, I have a few questions about it.

  1. Is there a list published anywhere of the specific cards it support? I don’t want to take a chance that my card is not covered in the “most 900 series” cards.
  2. Can anyone vouch for its quality? Is it in a reasonable stable state?
  3. If it is compatible and stable, what package do I need to install? I can’t find anything with NVK in the name in the repos.

Also if I’m completely on the wrong train of thought, please let me know, I remember hearing a while ago that the Nouveau driver is not good with graphics acceleration, but that may be outdated.

Like what?

Whenever I do something graphically intensive, my PC turns into a ticking timebomb that can lock up at random. Usually the more intensive the game, the less time it will last (a few hours if I’m lucky). None of the desktop keybinds work, I can’t exit to terminal with Ctrl+Alt+F4, even Magic SysRq stops responding, nothing useful gets recorded to journalctl either. At that point my only choice is to hold down the power button. Even though I have no definite proof, I’m pretty sure this is a GPU issue because it only happens when I play something that uses graphics acceleration, and something in user land shouldn’t be able to lock up the PC so bad that not even the kernel itself is listening to keybinds.
