Is Fedora going to provide WSL images to MS store

as title says i remember i saw like a year ago official fedora WSL images on Microsoft store, but now there is not so is it something work in progress or just not going to come and make your own as i did today

Why would we?

just askin and curious since there is Fedora Remix and provider is selling it so you need to pay to use Fedora Remix WSL

Then it’s not a community initiative and I wouldn’t ever use it. There are limited resources for the project as it is, why would we want to expend any efforts on such a thing?

There are legal reasons why fedora project does not provide wsl app.

The paid app is the esay way to gey fedora on wsl.
Also redhat has wsl app I recall.

There are people that have github projects to build fedora wsl, but that requires developer skills to use. I have not tried myself, maybe one day.

seems like good reasons if there is legal stuff

i used fedora container based 39 latest

the list is pretty small now that are ready to use easy setup

as long us this one works no need others

Wow, I didn’t know people were paying for Fedora on Windows. . . As if a VM was too foreign for them? IMO anyone capable of going the WSL route can easily just run a VM. I’m honestly not sure why people use WSL. Is there a specific usecase for it? Genuine question.

I agree with the earlier commend about using a VM. VirtualBox is 100% free of cost from Oracle and is easy to use and install on windows. Then fedora in its full form can be installed in a VM using VirtualBox so there is really no reason at all to have a specialized edition to run on WSL.

To each their own, but it seems ridiculous to reinvent the wheel.

The advantage of WSL is that you can go between linux and windows worlds easily. You can run windows .exe directly from a wsl bash prompt for example.
See https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/how-to-run-windows-10-programs-in-a-wsl-linux-shell/

With a VM you need to do that via the network which is far harder.

That may be, I have never tried WSL, and never will since I have fedora bare bones on the hardware. I also have windows in a VM on fedora.

With the known windows issues with security and malware the further one can remain away from running that expensive OS the better IMHO (it costs for the OS and it costs for most apps & everything is proprietary) .

YMMV

I think all those comments “I would never use WSL” make little sense. Yeah for sure, me neither.

But the main question is, what legal problems are there?

Also, WSL runs at near native speeds afaik, which is uncomparable to a VM.

I think it is that you must use microsoft close source blobs to make the kit and/or agree to terms that are against the Fedora charter(?).

I think it’s having to agree to terms – I asked about this on Reddit some time ago, and that’s what I was told.

I think there are ways to roll your own WSL image, but since I use mine mostly for basic commands and as a terminal, it’s easiest to just use Ubuntu.

I don’t know how it compares, but there is also one called “Fedora WSL” on the Microsoft store that is free. The github link is: GitHub - VSWSL/Fedora-WSL: This is repo for unofficial Fedora WSL based on the rootfs extracted from fedora docker image with a few additional packages installed and few configuration changes..
