Is anyone else getting this VLC clash while updating to most recent bits?

Latest F42 bits, seems that there’s a lag or conflict with different repos. Fails with Discover and sudo dnf update:

Internal error:

Error running transaction: file /usr/lib64/vlc/plugins/codec/libfaad_plugin.so from install of vlc-plugins-base-1:3.0.21-24.fc42.x86_64 conflicts with file from package vlc-plugins-freeworld-3.0.21-4.fc42.x86_64

I haven’t filed anything because I don’t believe there’s a bug per se anywhere, and I would think it will get resolved as soon as relevant repo maintainers are aware, so a heads-up?

I’ll try removing VLC and re-installing later. I’m not using it on this machine. Other machines will have the same issue.

Well, VLC isn’t installed on this machine! I tried installing but, probably unsurprisingly got the same error. So it would seem everyone is going to run into this.

I was surprised that vlc was installed as I do not use it (guess its a weak ref from somewhere).
Removing it fixed the update issue for me on systems that saw the conflict.

If you don’t wanna wait for the update get synced to the mirror, you can always download the rpm package and manualy upgrade it with the following example commands (f42):

wget2 https://koji.rpmfusion.org/kojifiles/packages/vlc-plugins-freeworld/3.0.21/5.fc42/x86_64/vlc-plugins-freeworld-3.0.21-5.fc42.x86_64.rpm

and

sudo dnf up vlc-plugins-freeworld-3.0.21-5.fc42.x86_64.rpm

and then you run the normal

sudo dnf upgrade --refresh

This problem prevented me from updating my entire Fedora installation this morning. I decided to remove VLC, and then I was able to update my system.

After doing this, I tried to reinstall VLC, but it was no longer possible. The installation process stopped every time with the same message:

Transaction failed: Rpm transaction failed.

file /usr/lib64/vlc/plugins/codec/libfaad_plugin.so from install of vlc-plugins-base-1:3.0.21-24.fc42.x86_64 conflicts with file from package vlc-plugins-freeworld-3.0.21-4.fc42.x86_64

I have tried many things to fix this.

Remove vlc-plugins-base and vlc-plugins-freeworld packages
Deleting /usr/lib64/vlc/
Deleting ~/.config/vlc
Clean DNF and RPM metadata and caches with ‘sudo dnf clean all
&& sudo rm -rf /var/cache/dnf && sudo rpm --rebuilddb’ and ‘sudo dnf update -y && sudo dnf upgrade -y && sudo dnf autoremove’

I still received the same error message even after doing all this, which didn’t make sense since the file /usr/lib64/vlc/plugins/codec/libfaad_plugin.so, as well as the packages “vlc-plugins-base” and “vlc-plugins-freeworld,” are no longer on my system.

Just run dnf update -x 'vlc*'. That would update everything except vlc.

The update is a SINGLE transaction and any one issue will stop it, by design.
If you updated in smaller sets of packages they would have installed.
You could have excluded the conflicting package and I think it would also have updated.

Having same issue and it prevents my machine from updating. Good to know the fix is out. I guess I just have to wait a few more days.

You can update all your non-VLC packages with dnf update -x 'vlc*' as @vekruse said.

Executing

   dnf remove vlc-plugins-freeworld-3.0.21-4.fc42.x86_64

solved my transaction issue.

I guess this way you have to remember to reinstall (if you need it). The way as @vekruse showed, it will push the new one when it is ready for update, right?

Hi i have the same issue and I don’t know if it’s related but now that i’ve ran dnf remove vlc-plugins-freeworld-3.0.21-4.fc42.x86_64 the KDE screensaver is broken (Everytime i lock the screen i get that error message that the screen locker is broken and i have to use loginctl unlock-session c to fix it). Also when i try to reinstall KDE with sudo dnf group install kde-desktop-environment i’m not able to due to this conflict. (Might also have to do that i use GDM with KDE. )

Changing the theme can fix the problem (though I’m finding it seems to recur).

I also got this issue, and I have not removed any of the VLC packages. So it was probably caused by updates to Plasma - your removing vlc-plugins-freeworld is most likely a coincidence here.

Edit: the specific problematic package upgrade seems to be qt6-qtwayland 6.9.1-2. See separate thread - KDE Plasma users - beware of new qt6-qtwayland version 6.9.1-2 (breaks lockscreen)

Best solution (and safest) is to just dnf update -x 'vlc*' as mentioned a few posts above. Worked for me. As of today the vlc conflict is still there, so I think it will take a few days for it to clear up.

Is there a recommended way for Silverblue users to solve this? I can’t seem to remove the vlc packages with rpm-ostree override remove and if I try to manually update with the package mentioned by @leigh123linux I seem to get several conflicts with pending libX11 and glibc package updates.
