Intel+NVIDIA drivers problems

Hello, I’m new to Linux. I think I uninstalled the Intel driver, so I can’t use my laptop screen and an external monitor. I have to use nvidia-prime-ui, lets me choose NVIDIA or Intel, but I can’t use both. My NVIDIA GPU is running, as shown by nvidia-smi.

Thank you in advance!

What did you do that makes you think you removed the intel driver?
It appears that the intel GPU has no driver loaded, but we need to know what was done and identify a starting point to begin recovery.

Did you disable the iGPU in bios?
Did you blacklist the driver?
Did you remove or rename some files or packages?

You actually have a very OLD nvidia driver installed. The 550 driver was replaced by the 555 driver, which was replaced by the 560 driver, which is now being replaced soon by the 565 driver and that GPU is supported by all those versions.

AFAIK the only way to stay on that old driver is to have either done a version lock for the driver or to tell dnf/discover to exclude that driver from upgrades.

My suggestion:

  1. figure out why the nvidia driver is locked to the 550 version then upgrade it.
  2. let us know what you may have done to prevent the intel driver from loading and we can then make suggestions to solve that issue.

I have a system that has the GTX 1050 GPUs (2 of them) and they are working well with the 560 driver and the 6.11.6 kernel.

Hi

I probably did that

I didn’t touch on the bios configuration

I don’t think so

I did install the driver more than once and the last time I tried was using the NVIDIA.run file so maybe this is why it’s an old version.

I will try to find where I blacklisted the driver and try to remove that to see what happens

it was blacklisted on sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

By removing it from the blacklist, my second monitor got back working, but nvidia smi just shows one task and it is this one

This is a little confusing.

AFAIK the nvidia-smi command is installed when you install the xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-cuda package, yet your comment was that you installed the driver from the nvidia .run file which as I understand it does not provide that command.

Please show the result of dnf list --installed '*nvidia*' so we have the starting point for the nvidia driver.

❯ dnf list --installed '*nvidia*'
Installed packages
libva-nvidia-driver.x86_64 0.0.12-3.fc41 fedora

Ok

Somehow the firmware package for the nvidia gpus was removed.
It can be reinstalled with sudo dnf install nvidia-gpu-firmware.

Since you do not have the drivers installed from rpmfusion it is very difficult to assist.

My suggestion, and what has almost 100% success for most users is to remove the drivers that were installed from nvidia using the .run file. Generally that is done with the same command used to install the drivers, but add --uninstall as the option.

Once that has been done then verify the rpmfusion repo is enabled with dnf repolist which should show the rpmfusion-nonfree-nvidia-drivers repo in the list.
Once the repo has been confirmed then install the nvidia drivers with sudo dnf install akmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-cuda. Wait at least 5 minutes after that completes then reboot. Now the nvidia drivers should properly load with the latest version (565. 57.01)

The nvidia-smi command should show the latest version now.

Hello, I did everything and the nvidia-smi commands give me this now:

❯ nvidia-smi
Failed to initialize NVML: Driver/library version mismatch
NVML library version: 565.57

and the second monitor is not working

I found this command on stack overflow
cat /proc/driver/nvidia/version
And the output is

❯ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/version
NVRM version: NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 550.127.05 Tue Oct 8 03:22:07 UTC 2024
GCC version: gcc version 14.2.1 20240912 (Red Hat 14.2.1-3) (GCC)

I rebooted again to check if it was something with loading the Kernel, and it has that error saying “Nvidia kernel module missing falling back to nouveau”

Apparently the module created by the .run file was not removed since it is what shows with your cat command.

Removal of the nvidia driver from the .run file probably would be
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-550.127.05.run --uninstall and it should tell you what happened.

ONLY after that has been done and you have rebooted should you perform the installation from rpmfusion.

It may also be necessary to do additional cleanup as part of the removal process.

Please show us the result of dnf repolist so we may verify the active repos and identify if there are repos that may conflict. Add the output of dnf list --installed '*nvidia*' since you say you have already installed the akmod-nvidia package.

running the NVIDIA.run --uninstall gives me a “there is no NVIDIA driver currently installed.”

the output of dnf repolist is

❯ dnf repolist
repo id repo name

I saw it has the error “Nvidia kernel module missing, falling back to nouveau” on the boot screen also.

Ok
Lets rebuild the drivers then attempt another reboot.
sudo akmods --force --rebuild
Wait a couple minutes after it completes then reboot.

Got the same thing on the boot loading screen and my second monitor is still not working, but when I sent that command it actually built the nvidia akmod module

❯ sudo akmods --force --rebuild
