Installing Fedora Silverblue to an external SSD?

I’m running Windows 11 on my PC and wish to install Fedora Silverblue to an external drive (SSD) connected via fast USB.

Are there any considerations I should take into account before installing in this scenario?

Like:

  • Will it overwrite my Windows 11 bootloader?
  • Will it be independent from my Windows 11 install?
  • Does Fedora Silverblue use GRUB and will that interfere with Windows 11 in any way?

Yes that works.

  1. No
  2. Yes
  3. yes, no

Depends on your UEFI. You can often choose the Fedora system to be the first boot target, if that is not available, it will boot windows.

Without secureboot you can just boot from a drive, with secureboot you should set “shimx64.efi” as target.

I guess this is done automatically by the installer.
