Install of Plasma Desktop 43 crashes even in emergency mode

Dear all,

I maintain 3 Lenovo P53S for a non-profit. I installed Fedora Plasma 42, and it was running great. But I tried to upgrade to 43 and everything failed:

I first tried to use the Discover app to download and install. But the Discover app stays open for hours without moving forward.

So I decided to use the command line version, and I followed the tutorial on the Fedora Docs and used dnf5 upgrade offline reboot.
It seemed to work great (download, reboot, install), but when I launched the installed OS, I was stuck on the unlocking screen. I tried rebooting in emergency mode, but none of the command lines I found online worked. I downloaded an ISO and created a live USB. Reinstalled everything and found out about the 2Gb needed for the /Boot, so I used KDE Partition on the live USB to resize the partitions. I even tried to erase everything but W11 and reinstall. Still the same freeze during the first loading this time. I can’t even retry another command line in emergency mode, as even this one crashes now!

Any idea?
PS: I checked, and secure boot is disabled

I would

  1. back up all important data using a live system
  2. Install F42 using a custom partitioning scheme (boot partition 2Gb, especially if you have an Nvidia card on board, which I think the P53s has.)
  3. wait with upgrading for another 3 months - or even wait until the end of the f42 support cycle (July 2026) - or does you Client require anything that is only available in f43?

It’s a misconception that f42 is old… you still get the latest libreoffice, browsers, email clients and whatever other software they need, especially in the flatpak world we live in.

As for KDE Plasma, you get the same version in f42 as in f43. KDE 6.5 came out too late to be included in f43, so you are not missing anything.

See f43 changes: Releases/43/ChangeSet - Fedora Project Wiki

Sorry, I couldn’t help for the actual question. You would have to provide more information on what you did and probably try to dig out some logs from the time of the freeze…

6.5 is in f43 now.

Probably still better to stay on f42 and have a more stable system until most bugs in plasma 6.5 are fixed. Especially from an admin and support perspective where you just want the thing to work.
