Include Linux LTS kernel in Fedora repositories as an optional package

Hi everyone,

After running into serious stability issues with the amdgpu driver on newer kernels (especially with RX 6000+ cards), I’d like to bring up a proposal or wish for discussion:

Would it be possible to include the Linux LTS kernel in Fedora’s official repositories, as an optional install?

There’s an ongoing discussion here about the problem:
:link: Amdgpu driver crash

Right now, Fedora closely follows upstream kernel releases—which is great for many reasons—but when a regression like this hits, users like me are left with no official fallback. I understand Fedora isn’t focused on long-term stability kernels, but having the option to install kernel-lts via DNF (maybe maintained similarly to how kernel-rc or rawhide kernels are handled) would make a huge difference in situations like this.

Why it would help:

  • The LTS kernel (e.g., 6.6.x) is often more stable for some hardware.
  • Users affected by regressions wouldn’t need to leave Fedora or patch kernels manually.
  • It keeps Fedora accessible to more users, including less technical ones.

Would love to hear what others think—whether it’s feasible, if it’s been considered before, or if there are good reasons not to do it.

Thanks!

This is a bit embarrassing  — it turns out the issue seems to be Mutter instead. That said, I still believe there’s value in discussing the idea of including an LTS kernel, so I’ll leave this open for broader input.

Thanks again, and sorry for the noise!

There is an option already, it is in copr but makes in not less useful:

Description

Kernel built of longterm 6.12 branch

This repository is created in the hope it will be useful. But is provided without any warranty.

This kernel built of the long term (LT) support 6.12 branch is derived from the fedora spec file adapted to build across RHEL/CentOS Stream and current Fedora releases. This kernel should be useful for those using external kernel modules, but don’t want to re-base their kernel too often and break their external modules compatibility. It should also be useful for “Enterprise Linux” users where their modified kernel might produce incompatibilities with external modules. Or even those of us who want to run closer to upstream kernel code. Last, but not least, it also allows to verify kernel regressions and helps bisect and identify them into LT branches, so they can be reported upstream.

An official option would be appreciated!

No problem, asking is not a crime. However please note that the Section you posted the question is just the wrong one. Ask.fp.o would be the correct one. Even better would have been to use the search function first, this topic has been discussed already in the past.

The Project Discussion section is reserved especially for members of the specific work groups and special interest groups to fulfill their daily work with the Fedora schedule.

If you want to discuss with this with users from this specific groups, you would have to give them the freedom to participate the discussion without being alerted over the notification system of Discourse.

This can be done within the The Water Cooler section, and the users which are interested will read and participate without being called/interrupted from their work.
