Help with this issue. I already uninstalled MATE desktop and tried re-installing, still doesn’t work.

The workstation uses GDM and it not supports x11 login anymore.
You would need to use a DM like lightdm to be able to log in again. You will also have to make some manual changes to be able to use it again. And Workstation with lightdm works but some nice functions will not work with it.
The best would be to move the mate partition to an external disk and use it as a spin (x11 only). You will have bad experience if you try to run Mate on the Workstation image. Workstation is now Wayland only.
You can still revert the change with this update:
