Subject really says it all. I just installed successfully Fedora 44 Server on a brand new HP Omnibook X. However to get the USB key to boot I had to disable Secure Boot first.
It doesn’t make a big difference to me and I’m happy to continue without SB, but I wonder if this indicates an issue in either the installer or the HP hardware?
I would guess this is related to the BIOS in the laptop. It may prevent booting from USB when secure boot is enabled.
You may be able to boot from the installed system with secure boot enabled even if the USB device will not boot that way.
I tried enabling SB again and “The selected boot device failed”. I had to turn it off again it to boot.
I would never even consider secureboot. It’s not really doing anything for security anyways. Just leave it disabled and enjoy that laptop. How is the webcam working for you btw? I have yet to find a nice laptop where the webcam has good quality with Linux. 99% of the time the quality is extremely bad.
I think SB has a niche of uses, but it’s not something I’m concerned about.
I tested the webcam with Cheese and it’s “fine”. It’d do fine for a video call, but it suffers from poor colour balance and that odd slightly washed out look that most video cameras have. (Under Linux, never used the laptop with Windows so can’t comment if it would be better there.)
