How to stop Power Saver from dimming the screen?

When the Power Mode is set to Power Saver, the screen turns dim after inactivity, specifically:

  1. After sitting idle, the screen locks. When I unlock it, it is very dim. (By default, Automatic Screen Blank is on and the delay is 5 min).
  2. After powering off/on or restarting, the screen is also very dim.

Important: the brightness level does not change, i.e. the slider is in the same position as before. If I turn it up, the screen looks strange, as if the light is distributed unevenly. I can’t get it to match Balanced.

So, I have to keep the screen active or switch back to Balanced before stepping away, or else it will mess up the brightness by the time I come back. Is there a way to prevent this behavior?

What I tried and had no effect:

  • Power Saving > Dim Screen > Off
  • gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power idle-brightness 100

Fedora 42, Gnome 48, Wayland, amdgpu, nouveau.

Issues like this often affect only specific hardware. Power management needs vendor firmware support, so first thing to do is check for firmware updates. If that doesn’t fix the issue, you should provide the output from running inxi -Fzxx in a terminal (as web-searchable pre-formatted text using the <\> button from the top line of the text entry panel). Searching hardware-specific forums may reveal a solution.

Thank you, I was under the assumption that this was a universal behavior in Gnome.

My laptop maker only offers BIOS and driver updates for Windows, but none in fwupd, as it’s a consumer laptop. Otherwise, Fedora packages are up-to-date. Here are my system specs:

  • Kernel: 6.16.12-200.fc42.x86_64
  • Desktop: GNOME 48.5 (Wayland)
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 4800H
  • iGPU: AMD Radeon Graphics 448SP
  • dGPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti
  • Driver: amdgpu, nouveau

(I have a history of Nvidia drivers degrading user experience - the external monitor would lag, the fans would ramp up more often, and the laptop wouldn’t wake up from suspend. Hence, sticking with Nouveau.)

Is updating the BIOS my only recourse?
