I’m interested in that new 50-series of NVIDIA GPU’s that launch this January, so I’m wondering how long I should expect to wait for new updated drivers for those GPUs when using Fedora?
It does take some time between the release by nvidia and for the repo maintainers to create the rpms and test them to verify they work properly. It also would mean that the testers would need the appropriate cards for testing so the timing is uncertain.
If nvidia has provided the open drivers for those cards it may proceed quicker. Early adopters of those cards would make ideal testers.
You can look at previous GPUs releases and the corresponding drivers. Also check the release notes of NVidia’s beta drivers. Note that NVidia is moving at least part of their driver now in the kernel, so checking those commits can also give you an idea about support.
Finally, phoronix is often the first to test new hardware, so looking at the testing config they use can also help.
