Horizontal stripes keeps flickering on Fedora KDE Plasma - Intel

Hello guys,

Since a few days, i notice horizontal line glitches on my laptop screen on all my screen. They are pretty faint, with distinct color that seems RGB only. They are driving me crazy. I see them especially on white backgrounds. I tried filming them with OBS or with my phone, but they are not distinct enough. I found this image online that is similar to my problem, but my lines are moving (flickering) and with colors…

I tried all sort of fix in GRUB or others that Gemini recommended me, but nothing worked. And i haven’t seen this issue elsewhere. I will add a video taken by my phone, but since it cannot record past 60fps and my screen is 60fps, it has some artefacts. Just focus on the horizontal lines please. This issue is just on my laptop screen. It doesn’t happen on external screens and in the BIOS interface (there’s no way of knowing since the background isn’t white). I have my laptop since the beginning of this year, and I’ve been careful with it, so I dont think it’s physical damage.

I have Fedora 44 KDE Plasma installed on my Lenovo Slim 7 14ILL10 machine, with:

Kernel 7.2.7

Intel Core Ultra 7 258V

Wayland

Sorry, English isn’t my first langage and I’m relatively new to linux. Thank you for helping and don’t hesitate to point out what I missed in information.

What is the output of kscreen-doctor -o command? You need to run this in a konsole terminal.

here it is :

Is the flickering somewhat like in this ?

I would’nt say so. The lines go from one side of the screen to the order when they appear, and they appear when the screen has to refresh or when i scrooll / zoom mostly. The flickering is like a sort of buzzing.

My laptop is less than 1 year’s old, so maybe i could ask them to check it if its on warranty ?

I do not see anything odd in the screen settings what would explain what you are seeing.

Do the lines appear when you are in the BIOS?

No,
no lines in the BIOS menu nor the GRUB menu…

I feel like i would have to reinstall Fedora from scratch, but i don’t want to if i can avoid so.

Does it happen in previous kernel too? before 7.2.7?

It did. I noticed it back in 7.2.5, then after 2 upgrades, still there.

Can you try going back to a 7.1 kernel?

I think the follow will do that for you:

sudo dnf install fedora-repos-archive
sudo dnf install kernel-core-7.1.13-200 kernel-modules-7.1.13-200 kernel-modules-core-7.1.13-200

Then reboot and pick 7.1.13 in the grub menu.

Does the problem still exist?

The issue still persists in 7.1.13.

I am out of ideas.

Can you check if this happens on live usb boot?
Dont install anything.
Move windows around, watch some yt videos, scroll rapidly.

Even trying what this guy said here? You have to apply some boot parameters here instead.
I dont know how to do it but maybe ask Claude for it.

To add to all kernels:
sudo grubby --update-kernel=ALL --args="xe.enable_psr=0"

To add to the default kernel:
sudo grubby --update-kernel=DEFAULT --args="xe.enable_psr=0"

To remove form all kernels:
sudo grubby --update-kernel=ALL --remove-args="xe.enable_psr=0"

To remove from the default kernel:
sudo grubby --update-kernel=DEFAULT --remove-args="xe.enable_psr=0"

Edited to reflect xe graphics vice i915.

I just tried on Fedora Workstation via a usb boot. Same issue, thought it was good at first, then they appeared.

i tried this before, but with xe since i dont have i915 on my system :

# lspci -k | grep -EA3 'VGA|3D|Display'
00:02.0 **VGA** compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Ultra 200V Series Processors Arc Graphics 130V/140V GPU (rev 04)
        Subsystem: Lenovo Device 383e
        Kernel driver in use: xe
        Kernel modules: xe

So i will try xe.enable_psr=0 instead.

Based on this link, should i try this line ?
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash xe.enable_psr=0

Thank you for helping me !

I updated the grubby commands in my post for xe vice i915.

FYI Fedora does not use splash. It uses “rhgb”.

I did the change, but my issue is still there. I feel like it’s an issue with the screen of my laptop. I guess I will have to ignore it for now, then contact Lenovo customer’s service to act on my warranty.

They said i would have to switch to Windows 11 before sending someone to my place.

Thank you guys for helping me again.
