HDMI port not being recognized

I did a reinstall of Fedora 43 KDE on my MSI GT75 Titan 9SF yesterday, after updating the system and then installing the Nvidia drivers everything was working well but once the laptop went to sleep mode for the first time the HDMI port just stopped being recognized all of the sudden

xrandr only gives an output for the built-in screen, I went into the live environment I used for the reinstall to make sure it wasn’t a hardware issue and the monitor worked right off the bat (it even made it the main display).

I feel like I should reiterate the monitor was working just fine until the laptop went to sleep mode for the first time, rebooting hasn’t solved the issue, anyone has an idea of what could be causing this?

It’ll be being caused by the HDMI port not being reset correctly upon resume.

Restart the laptop so you have a clean journal.
Sleep the machine.
Let it sleep for 5 minutes or so to allow any caps that do drain, to actually drain.
Resume the machine.
Paste the output from journalctl -b 0 --no-pager --no-hostname -g "hdmi|acpiI|nvidia" as pre-formatted text, otherwise the formatting is a mess.

There appears to be a typo in that command. I think it should have been
journalctl -b 0 --no-pager --no-hostname -g "hdmi|acpi|nvidia"

Nice catch - I had it all in uppercase and then lowercased it to remove any case sensitivity - Left a trailing I in there.

@supermario - can you try that again please, and when it resumes with no HDMI port active, can you also try an xrandr --auto and see if it wakes up? (have something plugged into it when you run this, just to give it something to bounce off.)

Running xrandr --auto didn’t seem to do anything, the monitor didn’t receive any signal and xrandr continues to list only the built-in display

You could try adding the kernel parameter acpi_video=0 to the Linux line in grub, booting as a one-shot with that in place (which should disable power management of the video card) and see if that helps.

Kinda surprised the xrandr didn’t at least detect the HDMI port(s) once again, but hey-ho.

I do note a few notifications from the kernel which indicate firmware bugs with your laptop:

ACPI: video: [Firmware Bug]: ACPI(PEGP) defines _DOD but not _DOS

DOD is Display Output Device, and your HDMI port is a Display Output Device, and thus you should also ensure that you are running the latest BIOS for your tin. Might well find that simply updating the BIOS helps enough so that disabling power management for the card ports is not necessary.

Give it a shot and see how you get on.

Adding the acpi_video=0 parameter didn’t seem to do anything, no signal on the monitor and xrandr only picked up the built-in display as usual.

As for updating the BIOS, admittedly I don’t really trust myself with something as delicate as flashing the BIOS when this laptop doesn’t seem to have any safety measures in case that goes poorly, if that’s the only solution left then I’ll have to make do with a single screen.
