Graphical issues on AMD after kernel update to 7.1.6

On Fedora 44 KDE Plasma, kernel 7.1.6-201.fc44 , GPU is a Radeon 9070 XT. After updating last night, I have been having some weird graphical artifacts in the form of colorful bands that occasionally flash across the screen. It’s not a hardware issue, as the artifacts go away if I boot into 7.1.5. This is what they look like:

Seems to be a kernel regression to me - should I just go right to filing a report on bugzilla or is there anything else I should try first?

I have the same issue. Updated to kernel 7.1.6-201.fc44 today and have some flickering on the desktop when moving the mouse. Flickering is completely gone when switching back to kernel 7.1.5.

I’m using Fedora 44 KDE and a Radeon 9070 XT GPU. Came here to ask for help and saw this discussion.

For info, I’m using a 7900 XTX and not seeing any issues.

Same kernel and version of KDE, not affected.

I thought I was going crazy, but I see them too. RX 9070 XT as well

good to know, seems to be limited to only 9070 XT so far. Maybe other 9000 AMD cards given similarities, if anyone on a 9060 or similar is having issues would be good to know. I’ll do a bit more digging and file a bug report on bugzilla soon.

Seeing this on my 9070 XT as well. For me it seems to happen consistently when logging into a session and then clears up. After that it’s sporadic.

Reverting to 7.1.5-201.fc44.x86_64 resolves it for me for now.

Chiming in with another report, but of the 9070 non-xt. I was getting similiar flickers/artifacts, most noticeable when opening/closing/resizing windows. so far seems to be fine on 7.1.5, though i’ll have to test more thoroughly tomorrow to see if it’s stable.

Can confirm that it makes the 9070 XT unusuable as well with flickering and artifacting on 7.1.6, rolling back to 7.1.5 fixes it

Exactly the same. Kernel 7.1.6-201.fc44. 9070XT. Rolling back to 7.1.5 resolved it.

If you open a case let me know, I’ll keep an eye and provide any info requested.

Same thing here for me. Noted that turning off HDR and VRR made the problem go away. Having the same problem on my laptop 680m when HDR is enabled.

HDR disabled on monitor for me (so no options shown in KDE) and tried disabling VRR and it continued.

I have the same artifacts with 9060xt on current kernel.

Did you try to lower your hz aswell? I did a switch to 60 from 240 and was then able to go back.

Aldo noted that i could tigger the issue by hitting print screen.

Just locked it down to 60hz and VRR disabled. Still getting artifacting although maybe not as frequently (not a solid metric I know)

One thing I noted that for me artifacts appear way more when doing cpu (not gpu) stress testing with occt.

I am seeing some artifacts with my 780m (RDNA 3).

I’m having the same issue on my RX 9070. I honestly thought my GPU is on it’s way out.
Also on Linux 7.1.6-201.fc44.x86_64. Will report back as to wherever downgrading fixes the issue.

Edit: Am now on Linux 7.1.5-201.fc44.x86_64 and have no graphical corruptions

I’m having the same issue. Since updating to kernel 7.1.6, I periodically have visual artifacts just like in the screenshots shown. I’m on a Framework 13 AMD Ryzen 7 7840U. My setup has gnome, hyprland, and niri installed. I have the flickering issue on niri, but can’t reproduce on hyprland and gnome - thought it was niri specific until I saw this thread, but might just be certain niri animations triggering the problem. Booting from 7.1.5 fixes the issue entirely.

Same on 7900GRE and Fedora 44 Gnome
