I got banned from Fedora Discord quite a while ago, apparently a permaban.
Long story short, I was just chatting with a fellow member about how we disagree about some of GNOMEs design philosophies but apparently we were doing that in the wrong channel or something. I for some reason got muted by a mod (felt like a little child at that moment, like “shut up, I’,m the stronger one”). So I wrote directly to the mod to confront him what the heck of a communication culture that is and that’s apparently what got me perma-banned.
I understand, writing in the wrong channel should be avoided but it was just an innocent soon to end conversation and nobody was being disturbed or interfered with. Also, IIRC, it was some kind of a “General” channel, so not even completely wrong to chat there. It seemed to me, that the mod just didn’t like that we were disliking GNOME, for some reason.
ANYWAY, TLDR - I personally think, that a permaban is a little bit exaggerated for an offense like that and I was wondering whether there are any steps or things that can be done or people who can be contacted to maybe have the ban deleted. I signed up to the Fedora Discord when I started using it around two years ago and it is still my main desktop distribution.
I’m not familiar with the details of your situation, but my suggestion would be to let some time pass (around one month might be about right), then contact a different mod and ask if you can be reinstated if you agree to avoid that subject. There is a list of moderators here:
If it’s discord.gg/fedora then follow the link glb posted and reach out to the owner. Looks like she works at RedHat and is unlikely to have banned you for the reasons you have stated.
If it’s another channel, it is not official.
Feel free to name the channel.
Thank you, I was really shocked when I discovered that I must’ve been banned permanently. It’s not like I’ve done anything offensive or harmful against the community or anything illegal.
As I already admitted to you via email, I might have changed my tone towards the mod a bit, but only after I truly felt mistreated and I hope it is still ok to think that this was an iteration of mod abuse at least to a certain degree.
I can’t even fully remember all the details but I don’t think I had said anything which would have justified a de facto permaban…
I was perma banned from the server a few years ago. I don’t exactly remember details but it sounds a lot like your situation. This is very common with Linux discord servers, I’ve been banned from the Arch one as well. The mods are completely unreasonable and it became clear after I attempted to appeal.
I realized that there is no point to appealing a ban when the circumstances that lead to the ban were unreasonable. Put simply, they do not deserve you. They deserve the community they have cultivated through their toxic (and frankly delusional) management style, and in my experience, both as a member as well as leader of several communities, the community tends to reflect its leadership pretty accurately.
One Linux server that comes to mind that is managed properly is All Things Linux. I’ve had a chat with the founder and they seem like they’ve got their head screwed on right, same can’t be said for so many other community leaders.
I’d suggest you two @mohairve18 and @azzurro2 switch over to Matrix, which is the official channel. Discord is listed as secondary channel, but it could also be called unofficial.
The administrators and mods of the Matrix channel are well-known in the community and present on this here platform. And that isn’t true for Discord.
Just leave it behind and join Matrix (links by @glb above).
