You can use fpaste to upload the trace to a paastebin server, which is not ideal as it’s only available for 24 hours, but it’s better than nothing.
Alternatively, trim the backtrace down, which requires that you have some idea of what can be removed from it. You can probably cut a chunk out of the middle, given that the originating point and the end point which crashed are the two most important parts - what joins the two can probably be inferred, or posted later, should it be required.
I’m not going to look into fpaste as I hate the command line and having to use tools like that.
Here is the start and end of the backtrace. To be honest I have no idea if that’s all that is needed as it might as well be written in a foreign language.

End of assembler dump.
It’s literally fpaste "yourfile". Wuold have been less hassle for you to edit this output and paste that. Each to their own though.
It’s an assertion faliure in packageKit.

Suggest you perform a dnf update outside of Gnome Software.
dnf update made no difference. I then took the extreme decision to reinstall Fedora 43 from scratch and it is still doing it.
The backtrack has lines like:
warning: Can't open file /hom/jonb/.local/share/gvfs-metadata/root
I expected to see /home/…. Since a reinstall didn’t fix your issue, it seems likely that the underlying cause is in your “home” directory. You could try creating a new user to see if Gnome Software works there.
As my wife’s laptop is having problems and can’t be upgraded to Windows 11 I decided to try Fedora 43 on it as a last resort before buying a new laptop. She only uses it for web and email so unlikely to have as many issues as I’ve had. All was going well until I updated the system and now the Software app does exactly the same on her laptop.
It seems fairly certain that a recent update is causing the Software app to keep crashing. I have 3 machines with Fedora on it now and it happens on all 3.
It would be helpful to verify the the crashes all have the same underlying issue. Please check that all 3 systems have similar “not found” for /hom/ and “assertion failure” messages in the backtrace.
I don’t see a lot of “me too” reports so the crashes may be associated with particular (uncommon) hardware, packages, or configuration settings. Are all 3 systems the same model?
No the home path shows fine but assertion is the same.
I’ve checked my machine too and the path is now correct in the messages. Not sure why it wasn’t before.
I just updated this system and hit what may be the same error. From journalctl --no-hostname -b -g packagekit:
Dec 21 11:58:09 gnome-software[2844]: PackageKit:ERROR:../lib/packagekit-glib2/pk-client.c:4695:pk_client_finalize: assertion failed: (priv->calls->len == 0)
Dec 21 11:58:09 gnome-software[2844]: Bail out! PackageKit:ERROR:../lib/packagekit-glib2/pk-client.c:4695:pk_client_finalize: assertion failed: (priv->calls->len == 0)
Dec 21 11:58:11 systemd-coredump[5329]: [🡕] Process 2844 (gnome-software) of user 1000 dumped core.
Edit: I filed a bug report, got “Bug is already reported: 2422976”
If it is a known bug, how long usually does a known bug take to be fixed in Fedora? This one is driving me crazy.
Fedora packages what upstream projects provide. I only encountered the bug twice so far (on different systems) and have not been able to reproduce it again on any of my 3 systems. Looking at the bug report, there are some cases where PackageKit was running in background and one using search in Gnome Software. Without a reproducible way for a Gnome dev to trigger the bug, fixing it could be very difficult.
That’s not good to hear because, for me, the Software app is one of the big advantages over Windows. Being able to search for apps, read the reviews and make an informed decision on which app to go for is a great feature. It’s far better than scouring multiple websites, searching Google for recommendations and then finding the installer for apps like you have to on Windows. Currently I’ve lost one of the my favourite features of Linux.
Please help provide information for this issue about the problem.
