Gnome-shell with weired focus issues. Not able to resize windows, and the mouse sends the clicks to another window

Sorry, folks, I don’t know if this is being posted on the right topic. Please let me know about it, right?

The issue started last week, when I was still running Fedora 42.
It started with not being able to drag windows around, focused windows not responding to mouse clicks, sometimes clicks being sent to background windows, and so on.
Checking the logs using journalctl -xef I’m seeing the following message:

Dec 22 11:26:52 fedora gnome-shell[5027]: Can't update stage views actor unnamed [ClutterActor] is on because it needs an allocation.

I’ve tried a few things:

  • Updating to Fedora 43. Same issue.
  • Reinstalling the system from zero. Same issue.
  • Create a fresh user with new configs. Same issue.
  • Booting a USB key with Fedora 42 and Fedora 42. Same issue on both.
  • On Fedora 43, I tried to downgrade to gnome-shell from F42. Got a black screen and was unable to log in.
  • Disabled every gnome extension. Same issue.

Also:

  • Run a memtest+ memory test. Tests passed.
  • I’m not seeing any graphical artifact on my screen.
  • The applications are not dying or behaving strangely. It’s just the window management itself.
  • gnome-shell is not dying.
  • The issue is with mouse usage itself. It seems that when using the keyboard to navigate, resize, move windows, and so on, everything works.
  • Sometimes when clicking on shell elements, like the system menu on the top right, it shows nothing. But if I get to the overview page and then click on the system menu, it appears normally.

The hardware that I’m running is a Ryzen7 5700X, with an AMD RX 6750 XT.
Again, not graphical artifacts on the screen, applications breaking, or anything like that.

Any idea what I could do here to fix this, or get information that could be useful on a bug report?

PS: Reading this post Sometimes can't click on windows: new bug on 3 computers - #15 by entityplantt I believe I’m facing the same issue. Using mutter 49.2-2.fc43 at the moment I’m writting this.

You might be able to find the issue experienced by you on Mutter’s issue tracker.

Let me give an update about this issue.

Overall, it was being caused by a faulty mouse. A Logitech M720. No matter if I try to connect using bluetooth or the Unify dongle.
I also tried to use it on a Windows machine :face_vomiting: and it went crazy.

So, no issue with Fedora or Gnome at all. Thanks for the support folks.
