Gnome shell shows (wrong) temperature warning

Are you indicating that you think 48c is too high for your CPU or something else?

As you don’t actually state what you think the issue is, and the title couldn’t be any more vague if you tried, we’re left to guess.

Fancy actually stating what the issue is, along with corroborating info like what was running on the machine, what power states the CPU supports, what the load on the machine currently is, what it changes to when in a different power mode and so on.

Next time, please describe the issue.
Iā€˜d report it to upstream Gnome project.

Just as a workaround try the Balanced or Performance profile to switch off power saving.

On Power Saver you can not deactivate Power Saving, as the profile indicates. This message is there because there is no more sophisticated information about it. I already mentioned this in F42 alias F43 as I also saw that.

I can change the mode, this is a false alarm.

Thank you for asking for details. Here is more information.

  • CPU: Intel Core i5-2400 (2011). Normal operating range is ~30-40°C idle, critical temperature is 80-90°C.
  • Observed: GNOME Shell shows a warning about high CPU temperature.
  • Temperature at that moment: 30-40°C (checked with sensors).
  • Load: only Chromium with a few tabs, no heavy tasks.
  • The warning did NOT go away after reboot.
  • The PC also became very sluggish / frozen at the same time (possibly related?).
  • After 10 hours of being powered off, the warning is still shown again immediately after boot.

I suspect this is not a real temperature issue. Either the sensor is wrong, or the warning is a side effect of some other problem (maybe a stuck process or a memory issue).

Any advice on what logs to check next? Thank you.

sounds a lot like a stuck or clogged CPU fan issue … try checking to see if the fan(s) are actually doing anything when you get the high temp warning.

Since its from 2011. When did you last change Thermal paste and clean the CPU cooler?

Never

I clean PC in April

Boot a fresh live Linux USB with another distro to see if you still have temperature issues, if you do it is likely a hardware issue, try a live Fedora USB too to find out whether a new Fedora install has that error or not.

Did you verify that the fan actually works, is operating, when you get this over-temp warning?

the sensors output does not indicate a temperature problem. 48 deg C is completely normal.

My computer is fan less, as mentioned I got the message to. Tested again and it seams to be a generic ā€œwrong messageā€.

On the screenshot it is on Power Saver mode. While switching from both balanced and Performance mode, this message appears.
If the system would be able/allowed to switch the power profile depending on the heat of the computer, It would make sense when, not being able to re select the higher profile again, till the system is cooled down.
