Gnome Files (nautilus) crashes upon launching

Fedora workstation version: 41

[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$ uname -r
6.11.7-300.fc41.x86_64

After I upgraded my Fedora from v40 to v41, when I try to open ‘Files’ (nautilus) GUI from gnome dock, it crashes.
To emulate MS Windows Explorer, I have configured the keyboard shortcut key as Super(Windows key)+E in Settings > Keyboard > Launchers.
So, when I type Super + E, it is supposed to open the Files GUI from Home folder (/home/sysadmin). This also crashes.

So, every time, the Files GUI crashes, I have to go to command line and kill nautilus like below because the above ‘Force Quit’ option hangs too.

[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$ ps -ef | grep nautilus
sysadmin 5337 2807 1 19:26 ? 00:00:01 /usr/bin/nautilus --gapplication-service
sysadmin 6340 4697 0 19:28 pts/0 00:00:00 grep --color=auto nautilus
[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$
[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$
[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$ kill -9 5337
[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$

My temporary workaround to open Files GUI:
Go to terminal and type nautilus or nautilus & (I don’t know which one is better) This will open Files without any issue.
In the terminal, I see the following error messages though. Could these messages give a hint on the root cause of this issue ?

[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$ nautilus &
[1] 6439

Anyone encountered a similair issue while launching gnome Files ? How can I troubleshoot this issue ?

Added f41

coredumpctl info run from the terminal right after Nautilus crashes might reveal some hints.

You could also try removing the files causing the warnings (after backing them up), and check if it fixes the issue:

cp ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel* ~/Documents/backup
rm ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel*

Even after another crash of gnome Files GUI, coredumpctl info only has info about another crash of VS Code from last night. Nothing about any crashes of gnome Files GUI at all, unfortunately.

I tried removing ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel* as you have suggested.
But, I couldn’t do it even after switching to root user and running rm -f

[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$ cp ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel* /home/sysadmin/Documents/backup_files_crashing
[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$

What is the output of this command?
lsattr /home/sysadmin/.local/share/recently-used.xbel*

While providing the above, please also provide the output of:

ls -laZ ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel*

One thing I’ve noticed is that on my systems there’s only owner access (-rw-------.) for this file, whereas on yours there’s group/others access too (-rw-rw-r--.). Generally user config files don’t get write access for user’s group.

Is this a system that has been upgraded several major versions, or maybe the home folder reused from older versions of Fedora (or even from other distros)? Or maybe needed to manually change permissions for some reason?

Here are the requested outputs.
Yes, I purchased this HP Omen laptop back in October 2018. Ever since then, it has undergone several major version upgrades.

[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$ lsattr /home/sysadmin/.local/share/recently-used.xbel*
----i---------e------- /home/sysadmin/.local/share/recently-used.xbel
[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$
[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$
[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$
[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$ ls -laZ ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel*
-rw-rw-r--. 1 sysadmin sysadmin unconfined_u:object_r:data_home_t:s0 0 May 23 2020 /home/sysadmin/.local/share/recently-used.xbel
[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$

Try removing attributes with sudo chattr = ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel, then remove the file.

I removed the file using the step you’ve suggested, and I restarted my laptop.
But the issue persists, i.e, Files GUI still crashes when I type Super + E or when I try to click on Files in Dock.

[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$ sudo chattr = ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel
[sudo] password for sysadmin:
[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$
[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$ ls -laZ ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel*
-rw-rw-r--. 1 sysadmin sysadmin unconfined_u:object_r:data_home_t:s0 0 May 23 2020 /home/sysadmin/.local/share/recently-used.xbel
[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$
[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$ lsattr /home/sysadmin/.local/share/recently-used.xbel*
---------------------- /home/sysadmin/.local/share/recently-used.xbel
[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$
[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$
[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$ rm ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel
[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$

But, now when I type nautilus & on the terminal, no more “Operation not permitted” warning messages printed on the terminal as posted above.

Do you have any relevant logs when Nautilus crashes when started from the dock?

I captured the dmesg output after the crash. Since there is no timestamps for the messages printed, I don’t know if these messages are from before the crash occured.

I suspect something wrong with my NVIDIA graphics driver. I use the rpm fusion one. But, previously, I had used the proprietary NVIDID driver (the .run one).

Search for the terms taint or NVIDIA or graphics below.

IMO the point is also: why such file had the immutable flag? Maybe there are other files with wrong permissions, selinux contexts or attributes? Who knows.

If you create a new user and you login with it, does the problem occur anyway?

Please check with coredumpctl list if there are crashes of nautilus caught. If so, please post the output of coredumpctl info <pid> (replace <pid> with the id of the process).

Could you also post the output of ls -laZ ~/.local/share/nautilus/?

coredumpctl list only seem to report a crash of nautilus that happened 10 days back (10-November-2024, Sunday).
But there have been several crashes of nautilus before this date and after.

2.About coredumpctl info <pid>

When nautilus was hung, I captured its PID like below.
It just shows “No coredumps found.”

[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$ ps -ef | grep nautilus
sysadmin 28323 2893 0 09:20 ? 00:00:03 /usr/bin/nautilus --gapplication-service
sysadmin 30028 27238 0 09:26 pts/0 00:00:00 grep --color=auto nautilus
[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$
[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$ coredumpctl info 28323
No coredumps found.
[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$ After nautilus was killed using 'Force quit' button (shown above)
[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$ coredumpctl info 28323
No coredumps found.
[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$

3. Output of ls -laZ ~/.local/share/nautilus/

[sysadmin@localhost:/home/sysadmin]$ ls -laZ ~/.local/share/nautilus/

I ran out of ideas. It is suspicious why that file ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel had those attributes, as well as group write access. Given that the system has been upgraded for several years already, something might have gone wrong at some point (that file seems to have last mod time from 2020).

You should try @alciregi 's suggestion above regarding creation of a new user.

Ok, Thanks ! I will try creating a new user.

So, how can I create a user similair to sysadmin user ?

For example, in /home/sysadmin directory, I have a directory named from D_Drive (reminiscent of my old Windows days) which has all my personal files ( 800+ GB)

Lets say I create a new user named johndoe.

johndoe user should have all privileges as sysadmin user like the ability to sudo to root. How can I grant this sudo privilege to johndoe user ?

As for /home/sysadmin/D_Drive, I think I can log in as root (sudo su - ) and then move it to /home/johndoe/

The idea was to first check if the issue gets replicated with a new user or not. The user can be created from GNOME’s Settings → System → Users → Add User, and check the Administrator option.

If you’d like to go a step further, and migrate your existing data (D_Drive folder), you can do that from CLI as suggested by you, and running chown/chmod recursively, if needed.

I created a new admin user as you have suggested. Logged in and tested.

But, the issue persists with the new user too. :unamused:

The same output from lsattr ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel and of ls -laZ ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel?

I found what triggers this issue. Wish I found this earlier.

I use an external monitor for this laptop.

At home, I have another laptop too - my work laptop

So, instead of physically removing and attaching HDMI cables from each laptop to the monitor, I bought the below HDMI Bi-directional switcher (of Ugreen make).
After attaching the HDMI cables from both of my laptops to this HDMI switcher, I can just press the button on the switcher to switch between the input displays from my personal laptop or work laptop.

For both of my laptops, I was using the Mirror option rather than Join option shown below.

Now, I did a quick test. When I switch on my personal laptop (Fedora) and display comes up only in the laptop screen, first. In this mode, the gnome Files GUI does not crash !

But, when I press the button in HDMI Bi-directional switcher and mirrors my Fedora laptop’s screen to the external monitor; the issue comes back !!! Even if I use Join option for the display, Files GUI crashes. But, I did not have this issue before I upgraded to Fedora 41.

Answer to Mike’s question: I logged in as adminman (the new user) and ran the commands. Here are the outputs.

adminman@localhost:~$ lsattr ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel
