Problem
In Fedora 44 Workstation (GNOME), the system should inform you about a prepared system update in the reboot/shutdown dialog, and run the update process afterwards. However, it fails to do so, which means the system won’t be automatically updated just by regularly logging in and rebooting/shutting down the system - you need to manually trigger the update process instead.
Cause
There were changes in GNOME Software, which now uses DNF5 plugin instead of PackageKit. One of the missing pieces was integration with the GNOME reboot/poweroff dialog. The fix is being actively worked upon.

Workarounds
Workaround are no longer needed (expand to see them anyway)
Trigger a system update manually. From your GNOME system, start the Software application. Go the to Updates tab, hit the circle arrow button to refresh the current updates, and then you can manually download and start the update process. Please don’t forget to do this regularly, until this issue is fixed.
When there are some critical updates available, you should still at least see a system notification, that alerts you about this. So while the reboot dialog integration isn’t working yet, this will at least remind you to start the update manually from the GNOME Software app.
